Hypothetical Tornado Rating Scale with Separate Damage & Measured Wind Speed Scores
What would be the pros & cons of this hypothetical tornado rating scale:
- Tornadoes are given a 1-5 score based on the damage they do with 1 being the weakest damage and 5 being the most extreme damage
- Tornadoes are given a 1-5 score based on DOW measured wind speeds with 1 being the slowest and 5 being the fastest - 0 being no recorded damage or no recorded wind speed
- These two scores are added together to give a score from 1 - 10 with 1 being either the weakest l and 10 being the strongest
What could be changed to make this scale more viable? How would the fact that DOWs are rare and the majority of tornado wind speeds are not measured be handled in terms of the measured wind speed score?
