Branson's - I mean *Tom*'s - wardrobe

I do love Tom's upstairs sartorial journey ...

The elegant and face saving solution that Violet and Isobel devise for the hand-me-down morning coat is an all time favorite scene for me.

I wondered (mid- to late- season 3) if Tom's dinner jacket is also a hand me down from someone - he wears it when Strallan is there post-engagement and pre-altar; or if Isobel or Matthew took him aside to convince him to step it up a bit after he became the agent, to be more professional.

Any ideas?

Addressing younger, untitled men

If a guest came -the servants called him

Lord Gillingham or Mr Napier

George was Master George

When Matthew and Isobel arrived he was Mr. Crawley, but after he married he was often Mr. Matthew, and Patrick Crawley was Mr. Patrick.

What were the customs around this?

(I think this wasn't uncommon in the US either, in the Gilded Age they talk about Mr Larry, and I even remember in To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout is corrected to call Boo Radley "Mr Charles" when they finally meet him)

How much did Carson hear? What did he think?

After the moment in the pantry, when >!Robert kissses Jane!<, the next day she offers to >!resign !<

As they are talking, the camera cuts to the screen that conceals the servants. There is some noise, and they end the conversation. Jane quickly leaves.

Then Carson appears and glares out the door.

How much did he hear? I wonder if it changed his attitude about Ethel and Charlie? Carson and Mrs Hughes have a conversation about that just a couple of scenes later.

When Vera Bates worked for Lady Flintshire

I can't imagine a better pair than Vera and Susan stuck with one another ... but Vera wasn't a lady's maid, so what job would she have done?

From the iconic, "I would sooner chew broken glass," to the severity of "take steps"...

What is the authoritative scale of Carson's disapproval? Im thinking of something like the Scolville scale for hot food/capsacian...

I cant rank them! I know I'll leave something out

  • I would rather be put to death
  • I hope you know what you're doing
  • I don't like it
  • It would bring dishonor on the family
  • What would the dowager say
  • Maids in the dining room

what else?
