Handle beginnings

The fit up isn't pretty, but I've got a handle in the works. I cut it from a log of black walnut. Sometimes it's nice when trees fall in your yard! Still have to add one more pin hole, then I'll finish up the blade sanding, glue up, and finish shaping the handle. Any tips for finishing? I have some tung oil and some boiled linseed oil handy. Should I just get some ferric chloride and make it nice and dark?

Totally intentionally short knife that I didn't make from a broken bigger one...

I managed to get a knife out of the failed one I posted last time around. Figured I'd share. It's no masterpiece, but is only my third knife.

I done busted it.

I'm new to bladesmithing. I rough forged the profile and bevels out of an old file then ground on the 2x72 to clean it all up. I had a small warp and tried to fix it with a 3 point bend in the vise. So close to working then pop! All that said, thoughts on the efficacy of the heat treat given the grain size? It definitely was skating a file. I don't have other broken blades to compare to though. Looking for some insight from the community.
