The “no happy ending in Night City” thing is a choice, not a rule. The lore literally hands us a way to save both V and Johnny.

Ok so I’ve been chewing on this for a while and I think the ending’s tragedy doesn’t actually come from the lore, CDPR just wanted a gut punch and picked one, rules be damned. Here’s the breakdown.

How the Relic actually works, since people keep bringing up Saburo like it’s the same situation:

Relic 2.0, the one stuck in V’s head, wasn’t just storage. Per Hellman’s own internal reports it was literally built to install and activate an engram in a new body. Active rewriting, not passive save file. We see it happen on screen: the longer Johnny’s engram sits in V’s body, the more it becomes irreversible because the chip is remodeling V’s body to work for Johnny specifically. That’s the chip changing the architecture to fit the engram, not the engram needing a pre-existing match.

That’s why the “but Saburo needed a genetic match!!” argument doesn’t actually apply here. Saburo’s thing was body-jacking, moving a mind into an already-living, already-developed brain (first tried with Hanako, worked with Yorinobu). Totally different tech being used. V and Johnny have absolutely nothing in common genetically or neurologically and the chip handles it just fine by rewriting instead of matching. If genetic similarity mattered the way people assume, V’s body should be flat out rejecting Johnny’s engram. It’s not rejecting anything, it’s slowly converting. That alone tells you compatibility was never the wall here.

So here’s the fix sitting right there in the game’s own rules:

**•**	Turn V into a pure construct first, soulkill/Mikoshi style. The game already shows this is survivable, Alt’s whole existence proves an engram can persist fine like this
**•**	Let the relic finish doing what it’s already doing and fully turn V’s original body into Johnny’s
**•**	Now the problem is just “where does V go.” If you’re worried the body can only get rewritten once (fine, let’s say that’s a hard limit so it doesn’t cause cancer or whatever), that’s not actually a dead end, Arasaka is a corp that runs black sites and disappears people for a living. Getting a second unclaimed body off the street to install V’s construct into is nothing for them. They don’t even blink at way worse stuff throughout the whole game
**•**	Install V’s construct in that second body using the exact same tailoring process we already watched work on V’s original one
**•**	Johnny’s out, V’s out, in two different bodies, everybody lives

Nothing here is new tech. No miracle required. Active engram rewriting, construct storage, Arasaka casually acquiring bodies through channels nobody questions, all of it is already in the base game, on screen. The tragic ending isn’t the lore forcing CDPR’s hand, it’s CDPR choosing not to follow their own established rules all the way to the least sad outcome, because “Night City always takes something from you” was the point they wanted to make regardless of what their own tech would actually allow.

I get wanting the theme. Cyberpunk as a genre runs on cynicism. But “we chose the sad ending on purpose” and “the lore requires the sad ending” are two very different things, and I don’t think the second one holds up once you actually look at what the Relic is stated to do.

Somebody tell me what I’m missing here because I’ve gone through this a dozen ways and it keeps holding up.
