A follow-up to my previous post

I’m a heritage speaker of the Mangalorean Catholic dialect, but I’m only at an intermediate level so I can’t really intuitively grasp all the differences.

Is the main problem a lack of shared vocabulary in higher registers (gov’t, news, etc.) or are there specific grammatical and phonological differences that impede understanding?

Obviously, script plays a role as well, but even if text in the standard dialect was transliterated to Romi or Kannada, I feel like the output still wouldn’t be easily understandable.

If anyone has insight or knows where I could find more info, it’s be greatly appreciated!

I’ve been trying to research major differences between Konkani dialects recently, but haven’t been able to find anything in-depth. Does anyone know where I could find more info?

Some examples of what I mean:

- Possessive pronouns differ between Mangalorean Catholic/Bardezi and GSB dialects

Ex: Mhoje vs. Migele for “mine”

- Infinitives in some dialects end in -unk while others end in -pak

Ex: vochunk vs. vochpak(?)

- Different interrogative particles

Ex: gi vs. ve

If anyone has any other examples, I would love to hear them! So far, most of my info has come from a blog on Wordpress called Demystifying Konkani.

Is it worth attending ACL in San Diego even if I’m not presenting?

For context, I’m an incoming MS student (starting in Fall) and I presented at EACL earlier this year so I’m not totally new to research. I thought it might be useful to build on connections I’ve made and network for internship purposes etc. + I already know I want to get a PhD in NLP.

I’d be able to stay at a friend’s place, but late registration + domestic flight is still a chunk of money for me, so not sure if I should just stay home / attend virtually.

Would really appreciate any advice/opinions!! Thanks
