Rocket Science for Kids!
I have been involved in rocketry for a number of years now, and one of my favourite things is watching a young person launch a rocket they have built themselves for the very first time. There is usually a nervous countdown, followed by a huge smile when it leaves the launch pad and immediately a lot of ideas about what they want to build next!
That is a big part of why I started Launch Lab Education.
Model rocketry is so much more than simply building something and watching it fly. Children can use free simulation software such as OpenRocket to design their rocket and explore how its weight, fins, nose cone, motor and recovery system affect its flight.
They can make predictions about how high it will travel, whether it will be stable and how it will return safely. They then get to turn that design into something real by building, sanding, painting, decorating and preparing their rocket for launch.
It is such a fun way to explore aerodynamics, physics, mathematics, engineering, design and problem-solving through genuine hands-on learning. They are not just reading about these ideas they can change something, simulate it, build it, test it and see what actually happens.
There are also so many different ways to get involved. You might start with a simple beginner rocket as a family weekend project, use one as part of a classroom or homeschool STEM unit, or help an older student design and build something more advanced.
Once the rocket is ready, you can take the next step and attend a launch with a rocketry club. There are clubs full of amazing and experienced people across Australia who welcome beginners and can help you safely launch your first rocket.
For those in South Australia, I also run a free mentoring program for students aged 12 and over through the South Australian Rocketry Club. Students are welcome to reach out for support with learning the basics, using OpenRocket, developing their design, building their rocket and preparing for their first launch.
Parents, carers, teachers and students are always welcome to message me if you are unsure where to begin, need help choosing a suitable project or want help finding a rocketry club in your area. You definitely do not need to already know anything about rockets!
We now have a range of beginner rockets, family projects, classroom and homeschool options, more advanced kits, and individual parts and accessories available through Launch Lab Education.

This is my small Australian business, but it is also something I genuinely care about. I would love to make model rocketry easier for more Australian families and schools to access and help more young people experience that incredible moment when something they designed and built takes to the sky. 🚀
