If anyone could give me some advice that would be awesome

I moved to a new city in Central Florida at the end of 2024. The only gym in my immediate area was an Anytime Fitness basically right down the road, and it had been the only gym around since 2018. Because of that, I signed a 24-month membership contract thinking no other gym would open up anytime soon.

Of course, just my luck, a Planet Fitness opened nearby at the end of last year in December. I don’t want to waste money paying for two different gyms, especially since I’m already paying about $21 bi-weekly.

I actually stopped going to Anytime Fitness for about 5 months after Planet Fitness opened, but I was forced to go back about a week ago when my friend (who I was going with) was gone for the week. When I went back, the gym was still very run down and honestly didn’t seem like it had improved at all.

I called around the time Planet Fitness opened, and the only ways they said I could cancel were if I moved more than 5 miles away, had some kind of injury that prevents me from working out, or, well… died, and or paying the buyout fee which I don't really want todo as the gym is very not well maintained. I also contacted the Anytime Fitness corporate email, and all they told me was that they would reach out to the management of that specific location and so far nothing else came from it.

I saw a review from someone who said they signed up in June 2025 on a month-to-month plan, but the same employee I spoke to told them they were locked into a commitment. They were also told the same thing about having to pay the full amount to get out of the contract.

Has anyone here ever been able to get their contract changed to a month-to-month, no-commitment plan, or is that basically impossible?
