"I tagged a full season of a pro handball league by hand — now trying to figure out which league needs this most"
Hi r/handball,
I'm Cyprien — last season I was the performance analyst for Balonmano Burgos (División de Honor Plata, Spain's 2nd tier). Official match stats there are pretty unreliable (sparse, often wrong), so I tagged the full season myself: every possession, shot, save, turnover, foul, for every Burgos match.
One thing that came out of it: across the season, whether they won or lost had almost nothing to do with their attack (top-3 in the league) and almost everything to do with the goalkeeper. Even-strength save % above 42% → they won 90% of the time it happened. Below 33% → 43% of their losses. The rest of the pattern points the same way — never the attack.
That full-season build turned into a project, HB Metrics (video side built with Nacsport) — and I'm now looking at where to take it next, beyond Burgos: which league, which club actually needs this. My guess is a lot of leagues below the very top tier have the same problem Burgos had — official numbers nobody trusts, and no time or budget for a full-time analyst.
If that sounds like your league — any country, any level — I'd genuinely like to hear what your data situation looks like, and whether it's worth bringing this there. Also happy to just talk shop if you tag your own matches.
