The Definitive Guide to MBEs
I love giving back to the community, so here's something I've prepared for my friends and mentees:
You should be doing between 35 to 50 MBEs per day throughout bar prep, ending up with 2500-3500 total MBEs completed. You should be aiming for an 80% accuracy. Do not let anyone else tell you otherwise. It is better to overshoot than to fail and be forced to retake. Here's how you approach each MBE:
Read the call of the question. Determine what the issue is that’s being asked. Usually, they’re testing some stupid small exception.
Read the facts very carefully and slowly. Sometimes there are red herrings. Focus and try to understand.
Pre-answer in your hand. It’s usually going to be yes/no + answer. So, pre-answer that.
Find your pre-answer selection in the answer choices. If you see it, good, continue. If not, you’re super off base and you don’t know the law.
Now go through each and every other answer choice and determine why it’s 100% wrong. Remember, MBEs mean that only ONE answer can be true, and all the other answers MUST be false.
Once you can (1) select the right answer and right explanation, AND (2) eliminate each and every other answer choice as being wrong and be able to explain WHY, you can have a high level of confidence that you got that MBE correct.
Sometimes, the right answer choice doesn’t seem “right,” but by process of elimination, it will be the BEST answer choice. If you know 100% the other answer choices are WRONG and why they’re wrong, but you don’t know why the remaining answer choice is right, that’s okay. That is likely the best answer choice.
Good resources include Adaptibar Grossman videos and Strategies and Tactics for MBEs. But the best method is to drill as many questions as possible.
