The Speaking Habit That Improved My French Faster Than Anything Else

Many learners wait until they feel "ready" before speaking French.
That's one of the biggest mistakes you can make.
Every morning, answer these five questions aloud:

* Comment allez-vous aujourd'hui ?
* Qu'avez-vous fait hier ?
* Que ferez-vous demain ?
* Quel est votre objectif cette semaine ?
* Qu'est-ce qui vous rend heureux aujourd'hui ?

Don't memorize your answers.
Just speak.
At first, you'll hesitate.
After a few weeks, you'll notice:

* Faster recall
* Better fluency
* Fewer pauses

The best way to become confident in speaking is to speak every single day.

Why Netflix Isn't the Best Way to Prepare for the TEF or TCF

Watching French movies and TV shows is enjoyable, but it's not the fastest way to prepare for the exam—especially if you're at the A2 or B1 level.
Movies often include:

  • Slang
  • Incomplete sentences
  • Very fast speech
  • Background noise

Instead, focus on:

  • French news
  • Easy French videos
  • Podcasts with transcripts
  • Official exam-style listening exercises

Build your listening skills gradually.
Entertainment has its place.
Targeted practice gets results faster.
What listening resources have helped you the most?

Stop Translating French in Your Head

If you translate every French sentence into English before understanding it, you're slowing yourself down.
Instead of thinking:
French → English → Meaning
Train your brain to think:
French → Meaning
For example:
When you read:
Le train est retardé.
Picture a delayed train immediately instead of translating the sentence.
Do the same with everyday expressions like:
avoir faim

avoir sommeil

faire la queue

This simple habit improves:
Reading speed

Listening comprehension

Speaking fluency

All three are essential for the TEF and TCF.
Do you still translate while reading French?

The 20-Minute Daily Routine That Can Improve Your TEF/TCF Score

Many learners believe they need to study three or four hours every day.
You don't.
A focused 20-minute routine is often more effective.
Spend:
5 minutes reviewing yesterday's vocabulary.

5 minutes reading a short French article.

5 minutes speaking about your day out loud.

5 minutes listening to a French podcast while repeating useful sentences.

Repeat this every day for three months.
Consistency beats intensity.
Small improvements every day lead to significant progress by exam day.
What's your current daily study routine?

This is what has help me over come my fear of learning a new language.

For the longest time, speaking French was the part that scared me the most. I was constantly worried about making mistakes, forgetting words, or sounding unnatural. Because of that, I avoided speaking whenever possible.

A few weeks ago, I started a simple habit: recording myself speaking French every day for 5–10 minutes. At first, it felt awkward and uncomfortable. I would stop every few seconds to correct myself. But over time, something changed.

Listening to my recordings helped me notice recurring mistakes, improve my pronunciation, and become more comfortable expressing my thoughts without overthinking every sentence. More importantly, it reduced my fear of speaking. I realized that making mistakes is part of the learning process, not something to be embarrassed about.

Now, when I speak French, I feel much more confident than before. I'm not fluent yet, but I no longer freeze when I have to express myself.

If you're preparing for TEF Canada or learning French in general, I highly recommend recording yourself daily. It has been one of the most effective techniques I've tried, and it costs nothing except a few minutes of your time.

Has anyone else used self-recording as a language-learning tool? What was your experience?

TEF Canada vs TCF Canada

TEF
🔹 More diverse question formats
🔹 Role-play focused speaking tasks
🔹 Often perceived as more demanding

TCF
🔹 Simpler exam structure
🔹 More direct task formats
🔹 Often perceived as more accessible

👉 Success depends more on your French level than on the exam you choose.

👉 I’d love to hear real experiences from candidates who achieved CLB 7 or higher.
