Does Eliminating Added Sugar Reduce Cravings?
I've been researching the relationship between added sugar, hunger, and food cravings.
One idea I'm exploring is whether substantially reducing added sugar eventually makes sweet foods less compelling and makes it easier to control eating.
I'm particularly interested in what happens in the real world—not simply whether people believe sugar is healthy or unhealthy.
If you've substantially reduced or eliminated added sugar for at least two weeks, I'd really like to hear about your experience.
- Did your cravings for sweets decrease, increase, or stay about the same?
- If they decreased, about how long did it take before you noticed a difference?
- After being away from added sugar for a while, did foods you previously enjoyed begin tasting too sweet?
- Did reducing sugar change your overall hunger or make it easier to go longer between meals without snacking?
- Were there particular foods—soda, candy, desserts, sweetened coffee, etc.—that were especially difficult to give up?
- If you eventually returned to eating more added sugar, what caused it? Was it cravings, convenience, social situations, stress, holidays, something else?
