A line of argument I’ve seen a lot is “well some people are children who will essentially press the button at random and it is our duty to protect them”.
For those of you who have advanced that line of thinking: Suppose we changed the problem so that we assume anyone pressing the buttons is capable of understanding the setup and making a deliberate choice. This is provided in the instructions, so it is common knowledge. Anyone not chosen to press a button will live regardless.
Does this change your answer? If not, why not?
