Is Middle School just not for me?
I just started subbing a couple weeks ago, and so far I have had pretty good experiences, except for middle schools. They are flat out defiant, to the point that multiple teachers/administrators can be called in and the students are still unfazed. The other teachers say things like “it’s not you, they’re just horrible no matter what.” Some students (who were well behaved) even said that the class was better than usual, but who knows if that’s true lol
I am also a gay man, and I feel that this immediately gives them a reason to be flat out rude to me. Comments on my appearance, on my voice, on my mannerisms. I don’t know how to shut it down besides saying “those comments are inappropriate, move on.” But they simply do not care. They just snicker to each other and ignore me. I am new to subbing and can’t tell how much of this is just the end of the year, middle school specifically, this specific school, or my lack of experience. It has definitely made me reconsider this job.
