Why did you choose to pursue a MASc degree at UofT?

I'm interested in knowing people's motivations for engineering graduate school. Why did you choose to do a masters? Did it stem from a pure passion for engineering-related topics, or are you doing it for practical reasons?

If your goal is PhD, why are you interested in a PhD?I'm trying to see if graduate school is right for me. I don't have a specific job role in mind that I would like to target, but my PEY was a bit mind-numbing, so I'm interested in graduate school if it can help increase the odds of finding a better job. I do currently have a job, but I'm not yet sure if I want to stay in that industry forever. My job experience leans towards one field of engineering, but I'm interested in another one for better stability.

Furthermore, how did you decide your research interests/which group to join? I'm asking this, because on some personal statements they ask you to indicate your research interests. So how did you determine that? I know which sector I'm interested in, but not exactly what I would be researching. I would hope the prof would guide you towards what to research.

Thanks!

Does taking courses after graduation affect your cGPA?

I'm interested in potentially pursuing a master's degree, and am graduating this June. My last two years weren't horrible. I have a 2-year GPA of 3.66 (average of 83.05%), but my cGPA is 3.40. I also avoided taking some hard courses in my last 2 years, because I wanted to boost my GPA. As such, I was thinking of potentially taking some more courses, as a non-degree student to get more knowledge in the area I would be pursuing my masters in (as I kept my courses broad in my last 2 years). If I get good grades in these courses, would it affect my cGPA/2-year GPA or would they not show up on my transcript?

M.A.Sc as a non-waterloo student

Hello, I'm exploring options for a potential M.A.Sc sometime down the line. In terms of admission, it says this on the website: "At the time of admission, each student must have a faculty supervisor who has endorsed the recommendation for admission." I was wondering if anyone from outside of UW has entered this program and how they found their supervisor? For example, do you have to coffee chat with them, and get to know a supervisor/cold email them in order to get into the program, or will they just select you based on the applications if your profile is good? Could anyone let me know about their experience getting into the program? I would be coming from UofT. I'm not sure if I can get into UofT for grad school, so I'm considering other schools in Canada as well.
