131 - Stickman Killing Zombie

131 - Stickman Killing Zombie

Got as a free Steam giveaway, it's a basic mobile style game where you move forwards and attack random zombies in short stages. The map scrolls only to the right and dead enemies bodies have collision detection so it can be possible to block yourself but you just need to be careful about navigating. A very minimalist art style (probably an asset flip), no real story to speak of and pretty short. It's fine as a short time waster but not something actually worth buying.

130 - DC's Justice League: Cosmic Chaos

I saw this was getting delisted and grabbed it on its final sale (go-go FOMO). It's a solid kid-friendly action-adventure / light action RPG with cutesy art-style where you play as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman with other Justice League members playing supporting roles. Each of the characters banter frequently with each other and quip as they fight with a voice acting roster from other dc animation I believe. The overall writing and jokes are more for a younger audience. Seemed to have plenty of references and jokes about the DC universe in general.

Combat is fairly simple. You control each of the three characters one at a time, attacking enemies and dodging attacks and swapping between them to juggle special skills or deal a different type of elemental damage. Leveling opens up new skills and you can find some artifacts you can equip on your characters. Enemies and chests reward you with resources for upgrading skills, artifacts and the supporting Justice League members you can summon. There are five difficulty settings but even the hardest is generally not particularly difficult.

The main campaign cannot be played in co-op; apparently co-op is only available in some sort of goalless free roaming mode. Many tooltips lack details on what they do besides a generic description so you can't tell how much an upgrade will give to a skill or exactly how much damage it does or odds on an artifact for example. Some minor quality of life issues. Regardless, still a decent and fun game but probably better for younger gamers.

129 - Assassin's Creed Origins

My first AC game, Origins is an action RPG and from my understanding was a reinvention from the traditional AC formula action/stealth. Generally heard good things about it and picked it up on deep discount to try out the franchise. Your character is a side quests (a kind of protector of the people) hunting the mysterious organization responsible for the death of his son.

The combat and stealth overall got it done but definitely felt a bit barebones at times and some elements felt clunky. I could never get the feel for the heavy attack and Chain Assassination skill felt very inconsistent (and assassinations could feel a tad slow I guess). Enemy variety largely boiled down to 'No Shield', 'Small Shield', 'Large Shield' and different weapon types.

Beyak is a good and interesting protaganist and some good chemistry and romance with his past wife Aya who has some moments where you play as. The story is overall pretty decent but has some rough spots. The side quests are a mixed bag while the main story started a bit choppy imo, got good in the middle then had bad pacing at the end (and a bland big bad + the final boss you don't even fight with your main character but with another one who has a fixed setup).

What the devs absolutely excelled and completely nailed was the setting. An absolutely incredible depiction of Ancient Egypt, the world feels immersive, dynamic and lived in, with NPCs reacting to you bumping into them. While many areas feel a bit copy/paste with similar objectives and enemies there's also interesting vistas, famous Egyptian sites to explore and a lust and beautiful crafted world. By far the biggest highlight for me.
