Your Favorite Underplayed Hendrix Masterpiece- studio thread (includes jams)
"Underplayed" is not quantifiable of course. You can choose an overplayed release that you still find under-appreciated.
In no particular order:
"Captain Coconut"- posthumous mix from Crash Landing
I have heard the unedited clips. Sorry, I'm a purist and a devotee, but I will not tolerate Alan Douglas slander in this context. This is an instrumental masterpiece that deserved a polished, commercial release and Eddie Kramer did a superb job.
"Peace in Mississippi"- also from Crash Landing
These two are one-off bombshells- "off the charts" on many levels. One is a futuristic fantasy; the other a heavy metal lament.
"Drone Blues"- 9 to the Universe.
Again kudos to Kramer. Again a one-off instrumental that is shockingly fresh after 57 years. The edited cut on the vinyl is near perfect.
Look Over Yonder- Rainbow Bridge
Sure, the guitar tracks are layered on- but the solo flat out kills.
Drivin' South- BBC, 2 takes.
I pull this one out whenever someone claims technical superiority for "Guitar God X". This was Jimi before he really matured as a guitarist (hard to believe),
The Drifter's Escape- For the vocals mainly- Jimi must have identified strongly with the lyrics.
