What are the absolute dont's of doing SEO / AEO Optimisation on a site?

Hi everyone, I posted a few days ago asking for help regarding increasing my site's presence over a competitor in Gemini / ChatGPT responses.

I've received a lot of kind help and tips from comments about what to do - essentially stating that authority + content quality is my go-to focus for the time being.

That being said - I'm starting to implement changes in the terms of adding new content with all tips implemented to see how it will behave versus what's already on the site but I'm really scared that I might cause my site to get de-ranked or de-listed or drop impressions / visibility / rankings if I mess something up so my question is -

Besides these:

  • Changing URL Structure without proper 301's
  • Using blatantly AI content with no value
  • Mass generating pages
  • De-indexing pages on purpose

Is there anything that I'm not aware of that is a straight no-go that will hurt me more than it helps while trying to create new content outrank the competition on LLMs and SERP?

Thank you.

I need help / advice for an AEO & SEO luxury transfer / experience company, ranking solid on search, but not so much on LLMs

So the situation is as follows:

A client of mine is ranking solidly well for the keywords listed on the site and its offerings, and semi-well on LLM's. We're visible, but not first and competition is starting to show up and outrank on some places. CTR is also low and I'm unclear as to why.

The stats so far (from GSC):

Past 12 months:

  • ~800 clicks
  • ~22.5k impressions
  • ~3.5% CTR
  • Average position: 20 (Why is this? they key pages are ranking always at the top / within first 3-4 results, is it becuase of all of the indexed blogs / pages that the avg gets skewed?)

From what I understand, that's a very small number of impressions over a year. I might be wrong. (please give insight).

My website design client is a luxury transfer / experience organizer in Europe (Croatia). We've built a site from scratch in Wix Studio. I'm a web designer / developer and just recently got into SEO big time.

Their brand is strong, good testimonials, known name in the industry, solid backlinks and blog coverage from outlets in the industry.

For key service pages on the site they're usually 1-4th on search and 1-4 on LLMs or its nonexistent in GPT / Gemini.

  • Home
  • Chauffeur Services (CMS - long tail service pages)
    • Luxury transportation
    • Airport limousine transfer
    • ....
  • Luxury Experiences (CMS - long tail service pages)
    • Categories (History / hedonist / unique / outdoor) etc
      • Tour / experience specific pages
  • Magazine (blog)
  • Testimonials
  • Booking form

What I know is missing and what I want to try next:

  • JSON-LD Schema for all pages (none so far)
  • Making sure LLMs.txt is optimised (didn't touch it so far but bots are allowed to crawl from the beginning)
  • Introduce a new CMS set of pages for Airline transfer (X to Y airport private transfer)
  • Add FAQ's and TLDR Citation structure to blogs and new and existing CMS pages (currently nonexistent)

QUESTIONS FOR THE SEO COMMUNITY:

  1. How do I know what I'm doing wrong with the nr. of impressions and the CTR?
  2. How do I know that the changes I want to do make sense
  3. How do I benchmark and track results?
  4. What should be the first thing that I focus on?

Thanks. I'm here for all questions and clarifications for further understanding since this is very important to me.
