Most popular + cheapest TCG to get into as a beginner

I'm sure this gets posted a lot, but I've always enjoyed card games but never really gotten into them. I've played a decent amount of Yu-gi-oh via the steam game, but never in person.

I'd love to start, but was wondering what is the cheapest/most popular TCG to get into? MTG is probably the most popular, but I've heard it can be incredibly expensive.

This post was sparked because I randomly saw 3 guys playing a TCG and I asked them what they were playing. They were playing Digimon and said it was because it's pretty cheap to build a meta deck.

I should have asked more questions like how to start, but in the moment I felt like I should just let them keep playing, so I came here to ask the questions I should have asked.

I have no friends that play TCG. How do I start playing? I live in downtown Toronto so there are card shops everywhere, but obviously I need to know how to play first.

Also, I am looking for a budget option but I'll still spend like $100-200. I just don't want it to turn into like $1000+/year
