Rain pants or just leg warmers?

I'm doing my first ultra in 2 weeks. I'm debating whether to bring rain pants + leg warmers or just leg warmers.

I saw a video of Robin Gemperle from the TCR. He didn't bring rain pants, just leg warmers.

The thing is, I would need to buy some rain pants because the ones I have for hiking are really heavy and take up almost my whole frame bag. Do I really need them, or are leg warmers good enough? If im just going to sweat under the rainpants it's useless anyways. The race is 2–3 days long.

Apidura racing saddlepack velcro strap length?

Does anyone happen to know off the top of their head or have a minute to measure the length of the velcro strap on the Apidura Racing Saddle Pack? I've got an aero seatpost and I'm struggling to find a saddle bag that fits.

Salty snacks for ultras

I'm currently spamming posts because I guess I'm a bit nervous. I'm racing Race Across Austria in less than three weeks, and it'll be my first ultra.

I think I've got everything I need. My fueling strategy is mostly a 2:1 maltodextrin-to-fructose mix at around 90 g/hour, with some snacks here and there. After about 24 hours, I'll probably just eat whatever I feel like. There will be three base camps, so I won't have to carry all of my carb mix from the start.

Now to my question: We all know the usual sweet snacks like gummy bears, Snickers, etc., but I can't imagine eating sweet food for 2–3 days straight. What are your go-to salty snacks that are easy to digest during long races?

How do you map water fountains and resupply points?

I'm racing Race Across Austria in three weeks and just got the GPX. I'd like to preload all the water fountains, supermarkets, and gas stations onto my Garmin so I don't have to search during the race.

I started with Komoot, but when I checked many of the mapped fountains on Google Street View, a lot of them didn't seem to exist. What's the best tool or workflow for planning resupply points on a long route like this?

Rain pants + overshoes needed

I'm doing my first ultra, and I need rain pants and overshoes. I'm only going to take the rain pants with me if it's definitely going to be cold and rainy. I tried the Gorewear Lupra, and they were perfect, but they're sold out everywhere. Do you guys have any recommendations that aren't too expensive around 100 bucks? They should be lightweight and breathable, as I don't want to sweat too much while wearing them.

Breathing problems on long training rides

Hey all. I've got my first ultra coming up and I've been putting in some long training rides to prepare.

The thing is, on those longer rides I sometimes run into breathing problems. I can keep pedaling, but I can't take a proper deep breath, or I just start coughing. It usually kicks in after I've been out for a while.

I know I'm not the first person to deal with this, but I can't figure out what's actually causing it. My guesses so far:

  • Pollen / allergies — timing and season might fit
  • Aero position — compressed chest/diaphragm when I'm low on the bars
  • Exercise-induced asthma — the coughing especially makes me wonder

Has anyone here experienced something similar? Curious what it turned out to be for you and whether anything helped, position tweaks, meds, timing rides around pollen, whatever.

Thanks!

First ultra: Race Around Austria Challenge (1000km / 16,000m) — sanity-check my lights and bag setup?

!!Error in the title: its Race Across Austria
Doing my first ultra end of August: Race Across Austria, East-to-West route, ~1000 km / 16,000 m. Unsupported, no follow vehicle. Three basecamps along the route where you can access drop bags packed before the start.

Bike is an aero road bike with an aero seatpost (D-shaped), which is causing me most of my mounting headaches.

Lights

Rules require 2 front and 2 rear. Front: I'm leaning toward 2× Magicshine HORI 1300 — identical lights, Garmin quarter-turn so I can swap them without tools, cutoff low beam, and I rotate them off a power bank through the night. Anyone done a full night on these, or is there something better in a similar price range?

Rear: this is where I'm stuck. If I skip the saddle bag, I need something that actually mounts securely on a D-profile aero post. Round rubber straps don't sit well. Seatstay or saddle-rail mounts as an alternative? What are people actually running?

Bags

Planning: frame bag + top tube bag + hydration vest. No sleeping gear. Rules require carrying warm clothing.

  1. With three drop bags available, do I actually need a saddle bag at all, or can I get away with frame + top tube + vest?
  2. If I do need one — any small saddle bags that work properly with an aero seatpost?
  3. What am I not thinking about? First ultra, so I'm sure there are obvious things I'm missing on the packing side.

Any input appreciated.

S-Works Venge stem 80mm (6°) + Venge aero clip-on bars – sold out everywhere

Hey all,

just had a bike fitting and got recommended a shorter stem for my Venge – specifically the S-Works Venge stem in 80mm / 6°. Problem: it seems to be sold out pretty much everywhere in Europe, and since the Venge is discontinued I'm not sure how much longer replacement parts will be around.

So before I keep refreshing shop pages: does anyone have one lying around they'd be willing to sell? Condition doesn't matter much as long as it's structurally fine.

While I'm at it – I'm also looking for the S-Works Venge aero clip-on bars if anyone has a set they're not using.

Located in Switzerland, but happy to pay shipping from anywhere in the EU/UK (or elsewhere if it's reasonable). Payment via PayPal G&S.

If anyone knows a shop that still has the 80mm stem in stock, that would obviously also be super helpful.

Thanks
