Regulated movement: The two small “fingers” next to the shock absorber above the balance wheel are the regulator. Moving the regulator changes the effective length of the hairspring, allowing the movement’s rate to be adjusted.

Free sprung movement: The regulator is absent. Instead, the movement’s rate is adjusted by changing the balance wheel’s moment of inertia, typically through adjustment weights on the balance wheel.

This is a simple way to distinguish between the two types of movements.
