UK Government alert

UK Government alert

Just received this alert accompanied by a loud alarm. So at least we know that these are working on the Light Phone!

(The red alert symbol was grey on the phone)

Music tool wishlist

I know Joe has said that he’s hoping to soon start working on a revised Music tool as it’s something he feels passionate about improving. For me, and maybe most of us, the most important things that I hope Joe adds are:

• Simple direct transfer of music from computer to phone via USB.

• If it has to still be via the dashboard, then no additional processing of audio files.

• Support for other file types (wav, aiff, flac, etc)

• Tracks grouped by album.

• Artist sorting (with all that artist’s albums shown together).

• Gapless playback.

Additional nice to haves:

• Optional album artwork.

• Custom playlists.

• Sub-sorting by secondary tag (for example: year)

Please let me know if I’m forgetting anything!

And massive thanks to Joe and the team in anticipation of this.

Light OS UI ‘secrets’

I have a growing library of tracks in my music library and scrolling through the list, swipe by swipe, is taking longer than I’d like. So I was thinking it would be much better if putting your finger on the scroll bar on the right hand side and sliding it up or down could give you much faster results. I then touched it. And it turns out that's exactly what it already does 😅

I wonder what else I have yet to discover.

This is not important at all

and may not even be interesting lol

When looking at my notes it's always seemed like the first two lines in a paragraph are closer together than the rest of the lines. I thought maybe it was just an illusion caused by the height of different letters so I wrote the same sentence out repeatedly in a paragraph (not a list) and then took a screenshot.

And yeah it looks like the second line is always 4 pixels closer to the first line than it ought to be in paragraph text.

Lists (ie not paragraph text) have even tighter line spacing except when an item in the list runs over more than one line, in which case the line spacing for just that item is bigger. So lists can look a bit janky.

Just an observation from someone with too much time on their hands 😅

To snooze or not to snooze

Since v566: When you tap an alarm time and get the Repeat Daily toggle option it would be great to have a second toggle saying Enable Snooze.

Things I've noticed after 10 days with the LPIII

Firstly, this phone, which arrived 10 days ago, has exceeded my expectations. So far everything has worked well and it's been a joy to use. I was initially in that new device fetish state lol, but gradually have come to use it as it's intended... lightly.

But despite being absolutely happy with it I have noticed a few things, most of them small, that could be better and thought I'd list them here:

Alarm

The ability to choose days when a daily alarm sounds would be great

Album

I've noticed that some images don't forward to email and after transferring them via USB I realised that the images that don't forward are always the largest ones. I don't know what the exact limit is but it seems to be around the 12mb mark. Any image smaller than that will forward without problems. Large images tend to be the ones with either a lot of detail or low light ones with a lot of grain. I use Gmail which has an attachment limit of 25mb so I doubt it's a problem with Gmail.

Calculator

Instead of a minus symbol the calculator has a hyphen. This should be changed to avoid upsetting the mathematicians and the typographers.

It would also be helpful to have a small indication to confirm which operator you had pressed, as often I'm unsure if my tap on a symbol has registered correctly or not.

Calendar

I'd prefer if an event showed notes below the event details instead of having to tap "View event notes" so that they were easier and quicker to see. Every event shows "View event notes" even if there are no notes.

All-day events are listed not just for that day but also for the following day. I'd guess that this is because the calendar regards an all day event as lasting 24 hours, but really it should only be listed for the day of the event.

The calendar sync pop up interrupts editing and doesn't save what you were writing so it's a bit annoying. Whilst in the middle of an edit the pop up says "you are being redirected to the day view" but it actually doesn't redirect you and when you tap "View updated events" you find that the event hasn't been updated cos you didn't get a chance to save your edit. It would be better to have just a tiny sync wheel at the top of the screen without leaving your editing progress.

The week starts on Monday for a lot of countries and I keep tapping the Saturday date thinking that it's the Sunday. Would love the option to start the calendar week on Mondays.

Camera

I find daytime photos to usually be a bit overexposed. It's great to have an easy exposure slider but don't know if the general settings need to be tweaked.

On the other hand, low light images are much better than I was expecting. I also love the haptic feedback for focus and capture.

Would really love to shoot video using the full 4:3 sensor.

Directions & Directory

It bugs me that the font used by Here on their map is not Akkurat. Also some of the place names have outlines that make them quite hard to read. It would look a lot tidier if Here maps followed Light OS style but I don't know if that's possible. I do remember seeing a mock-up of the map and it used Akkurat and it looked much better.

Out of date businesses on the map. There's a restaurant on my road that closed 5 years ago but is still listed. However, the Directory is up to date, it even shows a restaurant that has only been open for 2 weeks.

Music

Much has already been said so I won't add to it. We all know what we want :)

Notes

Nothing to note here... works great.

Keyboard

Auto-correct would be great. Spell-check works well but just takes too long and I find I just leave the errors in when texting.

The option to hide the speech-to-text icon. I never use it (on any phone) but on the Light keyboard it's too easy to tap by mistake

The ability to select text would be great

The letter P hit box seems smaller than the others and I often miss it, so I find I type sentences like "hoefully I'll get aid by the end of the month"

Notifications

The option to turn off vibrate would be really good.

I'd like to be able to choose a different alarm sound for calendar events and timed alarms.

I think that's all for now. Again would just like to say how much I'm enjoying the phone and look forward to what the Light team and the community developers bring to the device in the coming months and years. Very cool

And my friends are jealous.

Suggested solution to compensate for lack of RCS

I think we mainly want to be able to send photos to friends. At the moment you can forward to your own email. I realise the phone doesn't have an email tool, and that's fine, but if the phone contacts list also included a field to add a person's email address then when we tapped on the forwarding icon under a photo we could see a list with three options: Message, Forward to Email, Forward to Contacts, and then when you tapped on Forward to Contacts you would see a list of your friend's names, tap on the person you want to send the photo to, and done.

I believe the phone is capable of that and it would be fairly straightforward to implement. And it might go some way towards making some of us feel less handicapped by the lack of RCS. It's great that Signal is coming but not everyone uses it, whereas everyone has an email address.

What does everyone think about potentially creating a Diary tool via the developer program? A simple multi media diary that combined photos, audio notes and text.

I don't know if I could personally do it as I have no experience in creating apps, but I have friends who do, and I would be curious to hear if there was any interest in that.

At the moment we can take photos, write notes, and record audio notes, but they are all separate and disconnected. A diary might be a cool way to bring all that together in one place.
