George and Alvin in Sky high IQ

Ive seen this episode 100 times and I always get confused by George and Alvin, the secretaries. George is the one who works for the killer (Brant). Alvin works for the victim (Boss Hogg), right? George is promoted over Alvin because George is the one who warned the Brant that Boss Hogg had Alvin search Brant’s files and find out about the embezzlement. . . So George was rewarded for tipping off Brant? And when Alvin tried to stand up for himself saying he deserved the promotion, Brant calls him a great stentch in his life because of the snooping, right?

It’s not super clear to me and seems convoluted.

How to Dial a Murder

Good episode, love the banter. But why are the dogs not covered in Charlie’s guys and entrails?! Columbo playing with the dogs immediately after the killing is just . . . gross and bad writing.

Random for a dead man

There’s often chat here about Margaret’s age in this episode. Watching now and reporting that Margaret is under 18. Leslie / Killer / Lady Lawyer states “since you’re a minor . . .” When discussing the finances used for the ransom.

What murderer took the greatest risks? I nominate 2: Markum in Blueprint for Murder and Dr. Mason in How to Dial a murder.

Markus leaving the victim in a shed to rot and gambling Columbo would search the pile took a lot of patience and time.

Mason gambling his dogs would do the deed effectively, if at all.

Which murder was the worst planned? (Not unintentional killings like Janice Caldwell in A friend in deed, or Death Lends a hand). Which killers who plotted were the dumbest / sloppiest / most careless?

No wrong answers!

I nominate Milo Janus. Chasing the victim all over the building, trying to “strangle” him with a tiny handheld bar is so awkward . . . those scuff marks . . . the insistence about changing into the gym clothes - good lord, I think he says it 12 times in the episode . . . just a really dumb way to try to stage a death. And the research Gene Stafford had done was left behind, fully available to his estranged wife to just pick up and take over! Gene’s death was a waste since Milo never got rid of the evidence.

Portrait of a manipulator

The writer of Self Portrait, Robert Sherman, knew exactly how to write a controlling narcissist. His discussion at the dinner table: announcing the women must tell their feelings about the others . . . It might not have worked except he begins with the young naive Julie - who does as he says. This enflames the emotional Vanessa, who blurts out her feelings. Then the mature, “healed” Louise gives a knowledgeable, logical assessment of all 3 of them - Vanessa, who insisted on marriage, Julie, too young to understand, and Max - literally calling him a monster.

Later, when Max realizes he’s losing control of Louise - his first weapon he uses is to snap, “you never really loved me,” putting Louise on the defense.

Finally, the remaining women beat him the only way he can be beaten - they join forces so he can’t play them against each other anymore — and it works perfectly.

It’s a masterclass in less then 60 mins - showing how they came to be polygamous, the kind of man Max is, the personalities of the women and Max’s lonely end.

Side note: the subtle difference in the women’s skill sets - Louise the master cook, Vanessa who “can’t cook worth a damn” and Julie offering Max cold fried chicken from a bucket. Brilliant.
