Nearly half of women journalists say they are self-censoring because of online violence, reports UN Women

bbcglobalwomen Women are being pushed out of public life by deepfakes, Al-assisted rape and unasked for sexual advances, a new report suggests.

The research analysed the experiences of 641 journalists and media workers, activists and human rights campaigners from 119 countries who were surveyed in late 2025.

They found that more than a quarter were targeted with unsolicited sexual approaches, including intimate images, sexting and cyberflashing.

The report, from City St George's, TheNerve and UN Women, also highlights that 6% of respondents have been subjected to deepfakes or manipulated images and videos.

"This violence serves to fuel the reversal of women's hard-won rights in a climate of rising authoritarianism, democratic backsliding and networked misogyny," says Julie Posetti, professor of journalism and chair of the Centre for Journalism and Democracy at City St George's, who lead the research, published ahead of World Press Freedom Day.
