[MEGATHREAD] Edinburgh Summer Sessions

Dearest users of this here sub,

Here we are with a new Megathread for The Cure's concert at Edinburgh Summer Sessions. We can see there have already been some posts with questions and so on, so we are posting this one a bit early just for you.

As always, we ask that you please use this post for all things related to this concert. That way we can discuss it without flooding the sub and keep all the info accessible for everyone. Feel free to post questions, pictures, anecdotes, set lists, thoughts, gossip, etc.

The show will take place on August 23rd at the Royal Highland Showgrounds. We have been told that the band hasn't played in Edinburgh for almost 34 years, so it's amazing that they are back. You can find info on how to get there here. And here is some info on accessibility and what is and isn't allowed in the venue.

Some details:

The schedule is totally jampacked with great bands and is as follows:

  • 15:30 Doors open
  • 16.15 - 16:45 - Just Mustard
  • 17:15 - 18:00 - Slowdive
  • 18:30 - 19:30 - Mogwai
  • 20:15 - The Cure
  • 22:30 - Curfew

Age Restrictions: 14+. Under 16’s must be with an adult who is over 21+, max 4 children per adult over 21.

Entry is General admission. So even if you have VIP tickets, it doesn't mean that you will be able to get front row. VIP tickets only give you access a VIP zone with a separate bar, toilets and so on.

The weather is forecast to be "light clouds with a gentle breeze", with a max of 18° C and min of 10° C. But since there are a few days to go, it may change.

We will keep updating this post as the merch is released and we get more info. It seems like there will be no live-stream but if you know or hear otherwise, please tell us in a comments below.

Let us know if you are attending and what would be on your dream setlist!

Robert & Mary

I had never seen this photo before and it's so lovely. Found via CGS on BlueSky.

Taken by Alison O’Neill during the circus tent tour in the Netherlands 1981. It is part of her exhibition and book "Trapped In The Light". There are some cool photos on her website and you can follow news about her project on her FB.

Robert Smith Contact sheet print

I stumbled upon this fine art contact print of Robert Smith taken by photographer Steve Double. The images on the contact sheet were shot at Hook End Manor recording studio in Oxfordshire on 30th April 1993, and were originally annotated by Robert himself.

Steve recalls, "Despite being super easy to photograph, great company and with an image to die for, Robert was always a little picky about photographs of himself.

Famously, he would put hole punches or staples through slides or contact sheets of himself that he disliked, so I was a little nervous when these were sent over to Fiction's office for approval.“

I thought it was lovely and love the scribbles/selects on top! Shows how involved Robert has always been with every small decision that has to do with the band.

It can be purchased here.

Post concert blues

Does anyone else struggle with the post concert blues? I was looking forward to my concerts for months and used it as a giant motivator to get through things. With all the emotions from the trip, the adrenaline from the concerts and now facing real life and routine again… holy moly! I can understand why some fans just keep going and follow the whole tour.

I also know it’s a total privilege to have gone and seen them but I just wanted to say “hang in there” if you are feeling this way too because I’ve never heard anyone talk about it in our community. 🖤

Image is from the trilogy dvd interviews. I have had it on my phone for a long time. It’s one of those silly things Robert says off the cuff that you then find so relatable 20 years later 😅

Werchter Poster BTS

I’ve been enjoying the posters for the concerts so much and I love discovering new illustrators. I usually check the artist’s instagrams to see their work and have found a lot of them post about their inspirations and thoughts about the posters and it’s been really interesting.

The Werchter poster was one of my favourites and thought some of you would also like to read about Robert’s request about the wedding ring.

Taken from the the artist’s instagram.

Robert Smith on the Rolling Stones collab.

Robert Smith talks about playing guitar on the new Rolling Stones album on Mojo (seems like he wasn’t wearing a gown after all).

Simon & Matt Haig

I haven’t read his books but this post by Matt Haig showed up on my Instagram feed and made me a bit emotional. I thought others would enjoy it too. It’s really lovely when your favourite band are also lovely people. And now I discovered a new author too.

Here’s the link to the original post.

The Lovecats - Lyrics Video

The band just posted this lyric video. I know not everyone likes the lovecats but as a cat lover it has always had a special place in my heart. It's one of those Cure songs that sounds so happy yet are so dark once you listen to the lyrics.

I love that the video matches the single's artwork and I am also laughing thinking of Robert watching and approving it while saying "perfect!! No notes!".
