Should my husband (Brazilian) and I (Swiss) move to Sao Paulo/ Curitiba or stay in Switzerland?
Hi everyone, I (F34) am from Switzerland and my husband (M40) is from Brazil, Sao Paulo. We met 16 years ago in Canada and have been together ever since.
He moved in Geneva, Switzerland to be with me in 2014. He got a few jobs that are not well paid in security, retail, or things like that.
Then he got very sick (cancer) for 3 years and could't work because of that for a few years. Money has always been very thight. Now that he's (thankfully) healthy again, he can not find another job than in security, which is hard because he can get in some heated situations and doesn't want to keep working in those kind of environments. He is really a nice guy and it doesn't fit his personnality.
I have always worked as a secretary even though I have a master degree in adult education. When he got sick I took care of him and kept my student job as a secretary. Now I feel stuck, obligated to work as a secretary (I really respect this job but it is not my dream job). I am really trying to work in my field right now, but the only jobs that reply to me in my field (adult education) are not well paid at all.
We are tired of this life here and feel like we have tried everything. We never have anything left at the end of the month.
We would like to open a coffee shop but need a plan to gather some money first (I've got some ideas and I am studying to get the diploma needed for that in Geneva).
My husband tried to sign up to study but he is on a waiting list. So right now he can not even study what he is interested in.
We were wondering if we should try to live in Brazil, if it is easier/possible to open a coffee shop there, maybe in Curitiba, if there are some jobs for foreigners as well.
- Has anyone opened a business/ coffee shop/ restaurant there?
- How much would it cost for a small place ?
- How is it as a foreigner over there?
- Are there some community for french speaker?Of course I need to really learn portuguese but I know that it helps to be able to talk to people in my mother tongue at the beggining.
-If you live there as a foreigner, in what field do you work, or do you work remotely?
- How much per month should we earn to leave comfortably?
We are lost because we feel that because he didn't work for some time it is impossible to find a job other than in security. He speaks english, french and of course portuguese.
I can find an entry job in my field but we trully have no money left at the end of the month, meaning except my family, we have nothing keeping us here.
We were thinking that he could move there first to find a job, apartment and everything, while I work in Switzerland and try to create an online presence and talk about our plan, create a patreon and some online classes. After a few month I could join him.
If there is another community where I can post that, don't hesitate to tell me. I am very curious about learning more about how it is living there (Sao Paulo Curitiba or any place around it) as a foreigner.
Also we've got a small dog, how is Curitiba for dogs? Any agility places? Are they accepted in coffee shops, shopping, etc?
Thanks for your suggestions and reply. Cheers!
