Jim Walsh sued for defamation by citizen activist

Arthur West, a prolific filer of legal complaints, is suing Aberdeen Rep. Jim Walsh for defamation. West says Walsh, chair of the Washington State Republican Party, defamed him in social media posts after West’s recent setback in Thurston County Superior Court. On Aug. 7, Superior Court Judge Chris Lanese denied West’s request to amend or remove a statement set to appear on ballots describing the budgetary consequences of an initiative to repeal Washington’s new income tax on high earners.

Trump fires the new court-appointed U.S. attorney in Seattle

SEATTLE (AP) — President Donald Trump fired the new top U.S. prosecutor in Seattle on Wednesday less than an hour after the attorney was unanimously appointed by the federal judges in the district, highlighting tensions between the courts and the president over the powerful positions.

Roger Rogoff, a former judge and veteran state and federal prosecutor, was sworn in as U.S. attorney before 8 a.m. at the U.S. courthouse in downtown Seattle. In a phone interview, he said he then went to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and asked to meet with Charles Neil Floyd, whose 120-day interim term in the position ended in February.

As he waited in a lobby, Rogoff said, he received an email from the Trump administration informing him he’d been removed. He is consulting with other lawyers about suing over his firing, he said.

DNA Identifies Human Remains Found in Olympic National Park

Human remains discovered in Olympic National Park in 2000 have been identified as Joseph Louis Serrao Jr. Following a decades-long collaborative investigative effort that included the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office and advanced genetic testing and analysis conducted by Othram, a laboratory specializing in forensic genealogy.

In July 2000, a researcher discovered skeletal remains inside a sleeping bag in a tent in a remote area of the Sol Duc River drainage in Olympic National Park and notified authorities.

The remains were transported to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, where a pathologist determined the decedent was likely a man between 30 and 50 years old and had been deceased for six months to four years. Despite investigative efforts, his identity remained unknown.

Items recovered from the tent were processed by the Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory, but investigators were unable to develop usable latent fingerprints.

In 2024, a forensic anthropologist with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office submitted a DNA sample from the decedent to Othram. The testing analyzed a broad range of DNA markers to identify potential relatives and generate investigative leads. By 2025, the laboratory had identified possible family connections.

“This case remained unresolved for nearly 30 years, but investigators never lost sight of the goal of identifying this individual and finding answers for his family," said Debra Flowers deputy chief of the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch. "I'm proud of the persistence and collaboration that made this identification possible, and I hope it brings some measure of closure to those who have spent so many years wondering what happened to Joseph.”

The National Park Service Investigative Services Branch then contacted relatives in several states, including Hawaii, and coordinated interviews and the collection of reference DNA samples for comparison.

Based on genetic, genealogical and circumstantial evidence, investigators identified the remains as those of Serrao.

According to family members, Serrao was originally from Hawaii and had been in Washington before he went missing. The family's last known contact with him was in 1998, and they had not heard from him since.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case over whether the government can discipline doctors for what they say publicly.

The case, Stockton v. Brown, challenged the Washington Medical Commission and the Washington Attorney General over its COVID-19 information policies.

Two doctors who filed the lawsuit were disciplined by the Washington state government for "unprofessional conduct" after they said vaccines were unsafe, COVID-19 tests are inaccurate and alternative treatments, like ivermectin, are effective, according to a brief filed to the high court.

EDIT: This wasn't a win for holding MDs accountable. The plaintiffs had already won their case in Washington State courts.

Former Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward is seeking $10 million from the city after she was censured for appearing at a prayer service held by right-wing religious leaders in 2023.

Woodward, a long-time television news anchor here, was defeated in her reelection bid three months after the August 2023 censure by the City Council.

Her attorney filed an amended tort claim with the city in mid-April, raising the amount sought in the original claim from $1.5 million to $10 million.

Woodward contended the censure was a “scarlet letter” that continues to harm her.
