Night 1 with CPAP: 43 AHI sleep study → 19.5 events/hr
Well, night one is officially in the books. My sleep study came back at 43 events/hour, so I was prescribed an AirSense 11. Last night was my first full night actually sleeping with it, and I managed 6 hours 39 minutes. As you can see from the screenshot, I still had 19.5 events/hour and the mask seal needs work. I’m not too worried about either yet because I spent half the damn night messing with the mask trying to figure out how it actually wants to sit on my face. 😂 I also woke up around 11–12 to drink some water, took the mask off, and weirdly I think I seated it much better when I put it back on. That was probably my biggest lesson from night one: fit the thing while I’m actually lying down and then leave the straps alone. Other observations: • Feeling the machine increase the pressure while I was half asleep was wild. • Hearing myself snore inside a CPAP mask was hilarious, even though obviously the eventual goal is to not snore. • Side sleeping is currently a pain in the ass. Definitely need to figure that one out. • I slept pretty crappy because I was hyper-aware of the mask and kept screwing with it, but when my alarm went off I actually woke up a little easier than usual. Could be CPAP, could be the fact that I woke up with a machine strapped to my face. 😂 • Surprisingly, I actually find the mask fairly comfortable when I have it seated correctly. My biggest complaint so far is honestly the setup process. I got maybe a 10-minute demonstration on how to wear the mask, but actually sleeping in one for 6+ hours is a completely different animal. I wish someone had explained more about fitting it while lying down, dealing with leaks, side sleeping, etc. Either way, I’m absolutely in this for the long haul. I wasn’t expecting one magical night to fix an AHI of 43. If anything, seeing it already come down to 19.5 while I was still fumbling around with the equipment makes me excited to see where I end up once I actually know what I’m doing. For the CPAP veterans: what’s the one thing you wish somebody had told you during your first week?
