RAW members Arrested for murder
2018 Chaparral Park shooting in Anaheim — what actually happened
This case has been talked about locally for years, so I wanted to put the known facts together.
On October 25, 2018, 24-year-old Merfy Rivera was shot and killed at Chaparral Park in Anaheim. A 48-year-old man was also shot in the back and survived, while two other men were reportedly targeted but weren’t injured.
Police said there had been some type of confrontation before the shooting and believed it was gang-related. An Anaheim police sergeant specifically said he believed the suspects’ gang operated around the park.
The two suspects were Hipolito Sanchez and Fabian Santiago Mascareno. Sanchez was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with murder and three counts of attempted murder. Mascareno remained at large for more than 1½ years before Anaheim SWAT arrested him at a Riverside home in May 2020.
According to local knowledge, the people involved were associated with RAW / ReadyAtWinston, while the victim side was associated with DA / DrugAddicts. apparently aware of Mascareno as a suspect shortly after the shooting, but he managed to avoid arrest for over a year and a half before finally being caught in Riverside.
AThe official reporting basically paints this as a gang-related confrontation that escalated into a shooting, leaving one person dead, another wounded, and two others targeted.

Officers responded to the area of La Jolla Street and Arnold Drive at around 7:20 p.m. to find a 55-year-old man suffering from stab wounds to his neck and hand, authorities said.
He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive, according to police.
The victim was standing with friends when a vehicle stopped near them and a male passenger got out and approached the group, authorities said.
The passenger asked the victim and his friends about their gang affiliation then immediately started stabbing the man before running back into the vehicle and fleeing, according to Placentia Police.
Authorities say the victim and his friends are not affiliated with any gangs.
The Anaheim Police Department assisted Placentia Police with the search and spotted the suspect vehicle from a police helicopter in the area of Acacia Avenue and Canfield Lane in Anaheim about 30 minutes after the stabbing, according to authorities.
When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver drove into a dead-end alley in the 1400 block of Burton Street, prompting all three occupants to get out of the car and flee on foot, police said.
