What’s the history and timeline behind our understanding of the mechanical aspects of costochondritis?

I understand that, over the years, new research and clinical experience have led some healthcare professionals to recognize the mechanical aspects behind costochondritis, rather than viewing it as simply inflamed rib cartilage.
I noticed this subreddit was started in 2015, and I know both Ned and Steve have their own stories about developing costochondritis, figuring out what was actually going on, and eventually learning how to treat it themselves.
I’m curious about the timeline of their experiences, but also the broader timeline of when the mechanical understanding of costochondritis started to emerge. When did clinicians and researchers begin recognizing that restricted rib and thoracic movement could be a major driver of costo, rather than just focusing on inflammation?
For myself, I had this condition for decades. It wasn’t until about a year and a half to two years ago that a chiropractor first suspected it was costochondritis. Even then, that provider wasn’t familiar with many of the treatment approaches I’ve since learned about through this subreddit.
So I’m curious—how did we get from the old understanding of costochondritis to the more mechanical model? What are the major milestones, and when did they happen?
