Recently purchased a home in Ontario Canada with a 3-season sunroom. It has a small electric fireplace that makes it somewhat usable on colder days/nights during the shoulder seasons, but we shut it down completely in the winter. The room also has large operable windows and a ceiling fan.
We’re heading into our second summer with the space and I’m wondering if it makes sense to run a dehumidifier in there when it’s not actively being used. There’s a slight “sunroom smell” / mild mustiness to the space that I’d love to reduce, but there are no obvious signs of mold, leaks, or water issues.
Part of my concern is that since this isn’t really a conditioned space, running a dehumidifier might just end up trying to dehumidify the outdoors too — especially with how drafty these rooms can be.
Curious if anyone else with a 3-season room or sunroom has dealt with this. Do you run a dehumidifier? Keep windows cracked? Use fans? Lower blinds to block sun when not in use? Any tips for reducing that slightly musty smell without overdoing it?
