If Letterboxd Decides the Oscars Winner and Nominees (1929/1930-1940)

Criteria:

  1. The nominees are based on the highest-rated films on Letterboxd for each year.
  2. For the 1927/1928 to 1931/1932 eligibility periods, the U.S. release dates of the films must fall between August 1 and July 31.
  3. For the 1932/1933 eligibility period, the U.S. release dates of the films must fall between August 1, 1932, and December 31, 1933.
  4. Films that were not released in the United States will not be included.
  5. Foreign films will be considered based on their U.S. release dates, not their original release dates in their countries of origin.
  6. The official U.S. theatrical or limited release date will be used as the basis for eligibility. Premiere dates will not be considered. Exceptions may apply in rare cases, such as A Tale of Two Cities, which was nominated at the 1937 Oscars despite its original 1935 release date.
  7. Documentary films and shorts (less than 45 minutes) will not be included.
  8. The number of nominees will be based on the number of nomination slots used by the Oscars in that particular year.
  9. If there are fewer than 10 nominees, additional films will be added to complete a 10-nominee lineup; however, these additional films will be treated as honorable mentions.
  10. Movies with 100 or fewer reviews will not be included.
  11. In case of a tie, the movies will be ranked based on the number of Letterboxd users who logged and reviewed the movie.

The Patriot is the only lost film nominated for the Best Picture at the Oscars.

Ironically, the 4 original nominees in 1928/1929 have the lowest ratings in 1928 and 1929 (The Broadway and Arizona are both the lowest-rating film in Letterboxd at the year 1929 and 1928 respectively). So, this is the worst lineup for the Oscar Best Picture, I guess?!
