Whatever Browser , a WIP alternative to Brave/Zen

My WIP perfect app for browsing the dead internet. A simple, WebKit-based that can turn in any colors, gradients, tones, psychedelic mode or office. Combining Nim lang for core + Swift for native UI. Built-in ad blocker with 13k rules (from adaway's repo), browsing shitty news sites and youtube feels like having the Premium Web.

UI made in ~5 days using DS v4 flash/ Muse Spark 1.3. No OpenAI/Anthropic involved, lol! While nim core is made using generic, open-source packages part of my portfolio.

Made in EU, with Transylvanian vibes. truly yours: https://github.com/onebuckapp/whatever

things:

  • built-in compiled ad blocker, no js
  • split screen, multiple windows
  • rounded-pill tabs, or just tabs!
  • private mode, mute/unmute tab
  • bookmark manager
  • password manager with master password protection, password generation + strength estimator
  • browsing and downloads history
  • share URL as QR
  • find in page regex
  • lovely RSS crawler (speed, direction, refresh interval)
  • full noise overlay
  • background colors, gradients (linear/radial with angle and multiple points), loop video or image
  • customize tabs (inactive/active with colors, images or videos)
  • macos only (👀 looking into WebView2 for Windows and WebKit for Linux)

check roadmap, drop ideas (no cloud, no mobile, no crypto wallets!)

Whatever.app - Browsing the dead Internet ☠️

A browser based on WebKit, Nim (ma'luv) + Swift. Built-in ad blocker, lots of customization, and really cool 👉 https://github.com/onebuckapp/whatever. 0.1.0 is pretty usable!

It was originally started in Flutter + Nim, but I dropped that idea because I wanted a native UI. Before you throw stones at me: I didn't use OpenAI/Anthropic, but open models through OpenCode's GO plan (a good plan, after a month of LLM assistance, I'm at around 65% usage. It renews today, in a few hours).

A few details:

  • Ad blocker with over 13k rules compiled into WebKit
  • Nim <> Swift via XPC, keeping the UI clean and heavy things to Nim lang
  • Split screen / Multiple Windows
  • RSS feed + crawler
  • Share a page as a QR code
  • Hover link balloon
  • pkg/boogie database (for settings and history)
  • pkg/openparser (for QR codes, regex, RSS feed parsing, fuzzy search, and find-in-page)
  • Lots of customization options: film-grain overlay, solid colors, gradients, images, videos (tabs, window)

More features in the README

Roadmap: https://github.com/onebuckapp/whatever/blob/main/ROADMAP.md

there will be no cloud, no mobile version

Drop ideas!

strip metadata from photos, audios and videos

I guess we should animate this sub somehow. A simple CLI for removing metadata from files!

usage: striptease <input|input-dir> --out:<dir> [options]

required:
<input> file or directory (mixed formats allowed)
-o, --out:<dir> output directory for cleaned copies
(single file input plus --out:foo.ext writes one file,
                       not needed with --inspect)

supported formats:
audio: .wav | images: .jpg .jpeg .png .gif .webp
raw: .cr2 .nef .nrw .arw .srf .dng .rw2 .orf .pef .srw .tif .tiff
video: .mp4 .mov .m4v .avi .mkv .webm | canon raw: .cr3 | heic: .heic .heif .hif

options:
  --dry-run report only, write nothing
--inspect print metadata as pretty JSON, write nothing
--verbose per file kept and dropped chunks plus bytes saved
--overwrite overwrite existing files in out dir (default: skip)
--keep-musical WAV only: also keep cue, smpl, inst, acid chunks
  -h, --help show this help
  --version show version
