Did I trust the “fast and easy” jewelry insurance process too much?

I insured my engagement ring and a few gold pieces with Jewelers Mutual a while back. The process was really fast and they didn’t ask for an appraisal or documentation proving value or ownership, which I didn’t question at first since they approved the policy and were taking my payments.

Then recently I came across someone’s claim experience where they said they’d been insured with them for years but when they lost their jewelry they were asked for proof of ownership and a recent appraisal that apparently wasn’t required when they signed up. I’ve never insured jewelry before so maybe I just didn’t know better but now I’m confused.

Should I get everything appraised and documented now even though they never asked? I’d also rather switch insurers if this could cause problems later because isn’t the whole point of insurance knowing you’re covered when you actually need to file a claim? I really don’t want to find out I’m missing something after the jewelry is already gone.
