William's parents, Norman and Annabeth used to own a doll factory and all of William's animatronics were basically doll versions of their character. The company owned by Norman and Annabaeth was already massive, in fact, they even had movies and an amusement park and William just made it bigger. William's father died in 1964 and his mother died in 1965 of unknown causes.

William, his wife, Rosalina and his at the time only child, Elizabeth move into their house a month later, in June of 1965.

Elizabeth was sixteen to seventeen years old, she was born when William and Rosa were only nineteen so she had been neglected her whole life. She really liked Fazbear entertainment, Norman and Annabeth's company who was now owned by William and Rosalina and was in particulary really fascinated with Betty Debby (Circus Baby) who was her favorite character. When they living in the new house, Elizabeth started exploring the different rooms and found a custom-made Betty Debby doll Norman and Annabeth wanted to give to Elizabeth for her 16th birthday but never had the chance to because Norman died. Elizabeth takes the doll and goes to explore the neighborhood.

Outside, Elizabeth finds a girl, apparently named Susie that tells her that she shouldn't take these dolls and that the 'old people in this house make weird haunted dolls' and that she shouldn't even have that because the woman died a month ago. Elizabeth explains that they're her grandparents and that was supposed to be a gift for her and Susie tells her to try to be careful.

During the night, Elizabeth hears noises and checks it out only to find a strange tunnel in a trap door she found the doll in a day prior. She decides to try to find out more and onthe other side, finds a perfect world where her parents pay attention to her, she has a lot of good friends and everyone genuinely likes her and most importantly, there are a lot of Debby related things.

Elizabeth visits this place every night for six months.

On Christmas day, instead of the tunnel being open, Elizabeth finds the new animatronic version of Betty that her father has been working on secretly for a new location that offers her ice cream. (you guys know what happens after this.)

In 1982, seventeen years later, a very similar story happens to C.C, who as two years old at the time but instead of taking the cake Fredbear, the animatronic that replaced Debby for them, they ran away because the Fredbear plush, who Elizabeth could talk through told them not to. This caused C.C to become terrified of animatronics.
