Realistically, what are my chances of getting into the NGO/public health sector?

Hi everyone!

I’m a Biology graduate from the Philippines and I’m seriously considering building a long-term career in the NGO/international development sector, particularly in public health, health systems, and global health.

I’ve already started applying to international organizations but I wanted to ask people in the field for an honest assessment of my chances and what I should realistically do next.

A bit about my background:

- BS Biology graduate (graduated in 2025)
- Conducted undergraduate research on parasites in tilapia
- Currently working in a health-related role involving coordination with local government units and health facilities (Almost 8 mos.)
- Experience with field implementation, stakeholder coordination, report preparation, and project activities
- Interested in health systems strengthening, laboratory systems, global health security, and community health programs
- Considering pursuing a master’s degree in International Health in the future

Realistically, what are my chances of entering the NGO sector at this stage of my career?

Would you recommend that I stay in my current role for another year to build more experience, or should I continue pursuing project-based opportunities with international NGOs if given the chance?

Also, for those already working in NGOs or UN agencies, what skills or experiences helped you make the jump from an entry-level background into more specialized public health and development roles?

I’d really appreciate honest advice—even if it’s tough to hear. Thanks!
