I'm a parent looking for opinions on what level CM my son should do this year. He is 7.5 years old and has been playing piano for about 2.5 years. He's completed Faber 2B (which was CM Level 1) and is currently working through Faber 3A lessons, as well as RCM Celebrations 1 and other books.
His playing ability seems to be at CM Level 2, but his technique (e.g., scales) is currently closer to Level 1. Would it be crazy to have him spend the next month solidifying Level 1 scales/theory (he could easily master it by then), and then have him begin learning CM Level 2 scales/theory in July -- so that he would take the CM Level 2 exam in February?
This decision will ultimately be up to his teacher, but she heavily involves me in the decision-making process, and I know she would take my opinions into account when deciding which path for him. He *wants* to take the Level 2 exam in Feb, and he's a very quick learner, which makes me want to help him forge ahead to Level 2. Is this a reasonable plan, or is it setting him up for failure with flimsy foundations?
