Just returned from a trip to Kerala, and the contrast within our cities is eye-opening. How do we bridge this gap? (My observation)

Hey everyone,
I recently took a trip down south to Kerala. While the natural beauty was expected, the stark contrast in civic infrastructure and daily lifestyle compared to what we experience back home in Punjab left a lasting impression. It really made me wonder—where are we falling behind?
Here are a few major differences that stood out to me:
Impeccable Cleanliness: The roads and public infrastructure are remarkably well-maintained. There seems to be a deeply ingrained civic sense and a collective respect for keeping the surroundings spotless.
Sophisticated Simplicity: I’m sure there’s a spectrum everywhere, but the general lifestyle felt very simple yet deeply sophisticated. There is a noticeable absence of the constant need to "show off" that we often see heavily ingrained in our culture.
Culturally Rooted Architecture & Safety: The houses are breathtaking, deeply connected to their cultural roots, and surrounded by lush greenery. What really hit me was seeing small boundary walls and gates left wide open. It gave off a vibe of a truly safe neighborhood—something that feels like it’s becoming extinct back here in Ludhiana.
Next-Level Drainage Systems: Kerala gets heavy monsoons, yet the roads and sidewalks remain perfectly clear. No waterlogging whatsoever. Compare that to our situation, where just 20 minutes of rain leaves our roads flooded until the next day.
Overall, the region just felt on a completely different level of development and community trust. It makes me genuinely want to see us work towards making Punjab feel that safe, clean, and efficient again.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you traveled south and noticed similar differences? More importantly, what are some actionable steps—whether on an individual, community, or administrative level—we could take to start improving our own neighborhoods? Let’s discuss.
