appropriate toddler punishments

have a 2.5 yo son who i feel is in peak terrible 2s borderline threenager. he can be such an angel until he isnt. i feel ive attempted gentle parenting and positive reinforcement to correct his ways but it’s at a point where i feel he needs negative punishment. so lately ive been putting him in his room and telling alexa to set a 5 min timer. after 5 min, we sit together in the chair where i cuddle him to calm him down and then i have a talk with him tell so he understands why he had a timeout while also tryinf to show him i still love him. i think it works but dont know if this is appropriate. what forms of punishments do you do?

examples of why he gets punished:
- when he gets mad/frustrated he hits his face/head (i try to teach him to say “im mad” and stomp his foot but sometimes it doesnt work), i sit him on the bathroom counter so i have better control to brush his teeth but then like tn he will fill his toothbrush cup with the faucet water and dump water all over the counter despite me saying no)
