Topping off water in tanks.

Hey all, quick question i had,

When topping off due to evaporation, i understand that the minerals remain behind from the evaporated water, would just topping off the evaporated water with RO or distilled water suffice? Then after a while, do a larger water change, to like compensate for too much minerals accumulated/too little minerals??? Or am i misunderstanding this whole water change business. Can someone please explain it to me?

EDIT: I understand that large water changes are not very necessary, but i mean just in regards to topping off due to evaporation.

Questions about a Shrimp tank

G'day everybody,
Im fairly new to the hobby and i wanted to make a Shrimp tank, i have a 16L tank currently and im still gathering bits and bobs such as sand and plants.

My questions are:

  1. What sorta sand could i use in the tank?
  2. Can i just leave the water to sit for 24hrs roughly before filling the tank? (instead of dechlorinating). Ive seen some things online about copper content in water etc, im located in Perth, WA, if that helps.
