Should Java Developers Switch to Python in the AI Era — or Is Java Still a Better Career Bet?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot, especially with AI/LLMs, automation, data engineering, and agentic AI growing so quickly.

Java is still everywhere in enterprise systems, Spring Boot, microservices, banking, fintech, and large-scale backend engineering. But Python seems to dominate much of the AI/ML ecosystem.

So for an experienced Java developer starting to think about the next 5–10 years:

Would you actually switch to Python, or would you keep Java as your primary language and simply add Python to your toolkit?

A few questions I'm curious about:

  • Is Python becoming a career requirement for Java developers because of AI?
  • Is switching languages actually worth the opportunity cost?
  • Can a strong Java developer remain competitive in AI without becoming a Python developer?
  • Is Java + Python the ideal combination now?
  • For someone with 8–15+ years of Java experience, would you recommend a complete transition or just learning Python for AI/automation?
  • Where do you think Java vs Python will be in 2030?

I'm especially interested in hearing from developers who have actually made the transition from Java → Python, or who deliberately chose to stay with Java.

What would you do if you were starting your career today?
