Anyone familiar with a bike having the largest sprocket on the back significantly larger than the next largest?
I might be explaining this wrong; a friend of mine has a Trek brand mountain bike that he’s giving to me. I was looking at it and noticed that on the back, the gears are normal, except the largest sprocket it way bigger than the next one down. Like, the largest sprocket is maybe 6” across, and the next one down is maybe 4.5” across. The rest step down in small increments like normal. I’ve just never seen anything like it.
I’m wondering if it’s supposed to be like an overdrive in a car, or something? Or maybe someone did work on the bike and did something stupid. I’m curious if anyone has seen anything like it. I haven’t had a chance to ride it yet, and I’m wondering if it’ll even shift, considering the large difference between that gear and the next one down. I wish I had a picture and I’ll take one tomorrow if I remember.
At the end of the day the bike is being given to me and I can’t complain, I’m just curious if it’s something normal that I’ve never seen, or if it’s something else.
