Blue bases tempo deck to get started

Hey guys!

I am about to get my feet wet into the pioneer format (in mtga)!!!

I would like your opinion before I start pouring resources.

Is something like mono blue or UW spirits a good fit for the current meta? I am not really expecting to have the absolute best deck, but I want to know if it's going to get stomped all over.

If you have any other budgety tempo blue based deck suggestions, I am all hears!

Branching off from standard: Pioneer or Historic?

Hey everyone,

I would like to pick you guys's brain on which format would be the best for me as a new player. Here is what I am looking for:

  • Non rotation format so that I can "feel better" spending wildcards (covered by both)
  • Quick queues and long term support
  • Meta variety and some room for janky stuff (at least in unranked)
  • Your overall subjective opinion on which one is more enjoyable

Thank you very much for your time!

Need help with deck idea

Hello everyone!

I would like to pick you guys' brain for a minute or two if you don't mind. I used to play MTG like 20 years ago and have started MTGA a month or so ago. I am looking for a budget deck idea I can fuck around with on unranked.

I currently have the izzet spellementals package going on to grind the ladder and things are going well. I also have a mono blue version that focuses on interaction too. This is very close to the version I use:

https://www.tcgplayer.com/content/article/Izzet-Spellementals-MTG-Deck-Guide-How-to-Play-the-Breakout-Pro-Tour-Strategy/7b703c6f-843b-4cae-bb0c-3bcfe75fbdb4/?srsltid=AfmBOoq4GQHfVuSnjswY8934hMN6Y6PGfxfspigUwJQusPYIULGLTy24

So, I may be evil, but I love the interaction play style, always did. I used to have a nasty UB (it's called dimir now) with lots of counters, removals, control magics and graveyard play. I just love the aesthetics of the black cards and the nimble tempo play style of the blue cards.

So, would there be some kind of BUDGET UB tempo deck that uses cards like [[Winternight Stories]] to draw and discard and then try and play a nasty big creature that was discarded.

Basically.. I love the elementals synergy, but I just want to try something else. I don't mind if it's janky, I just need ideas :D

edit: in standard if possible

Thank you so much guys!

Wanted to thank everyone that helped me in the past few weeks

I just wanted to drop by and give a big thanks to those of you that took the time to answer my posts asking for help starting out!

I get the gist of it and I finally crafted myself a meta deck (didn't want to waste my WCs on some jank).

I went with a budget Izzet Spellemental build (didn't fork out the WCs for the dual lands yet) and I am having an absolute blast. The play style is really fun, all though I understand that I am probably still enjoying the "training wheel" matchmaking at this point.

Anyway.. MTG is fun and I am pleasantly surprised at this online adaptation.

Now, let's see how I handle going forward, dealing with the mastery pass and stuff like that. I will have to get good at drafting to get gems I guess :)

Again, thanks everyone and enjoy the weekend (the long weekend for fellow Canadians!)
