Just started an insane Journey! Pt. 1

I read HoL a few years back, senior year of high school. I enjoyed it, but kind of superficially I suppose? I didn’t pay too much attention to the layers of the book, the premise of the House alone made me invested enough to read it. However, for reasons I’m still figuring out, I’ve decided to read it again over the summer, this time with a fine tooth comb. I got through the introduction alone in a couple hours (yes hours!) and I really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see how this goes, and I’ll update here and there to show off some of my fav parts. The intro is very short, so everything you see is the majority of what I’ve reviewed.

I do plan on being very open during my reading, already some parts of my margin writing I’d rather keep private, but I’m excited in a weird way to be vulnerable here. Plus, this is HoL we’re talking about, there’s plenty of obscenities and vulgarities throughout the work, so a few of my own won’t change much. See you all later!

So, I’m sure this has been discussed on here before, but I haven’t seen it mentioned and I wanted to ask myself. In Pitfalls, there are many road signs found in one of the rooms before the chase scene with the Lifeform. All of these signs are flipped, as if looking at them from a mirror. Also, in the trailer for the movie, there’s a stop sign at a point that’s shown to be flipped, and I’m sure there are other instances in the series as well, but those two instances jump to my mind.

However, in FF3, at the 28:24 mark, there’s clearly a stop sign shown that is correctly faced. Why is this? My first thought is that, if the theory that the Complex is a kind of entity that copies things from the real world and recreates them as best it can, then maybe it was just in the middle of correctly copying road signs. It helps that there are Chinese flyers in the video that mention the year 2022, which shows how time doesn’t really work right in the Complex, and can be pulled from many different eras, so maybe this “era” that that particular stop sign was pulled from was a future one, so a more advanced copy. I think this because the same room the correct stop sign is found also has Chinese art in it, though it’s a strenuous link at best.

While writing this, I had another thought about how the Complex copies instances. Since time doesn’t work linearly within the Complex, how would progress in its ability to copy be tracked? If an area of the Complex pulls from a certain period of time can be assumed to also to exist and occur within that same area of time, then areas that pull from the future would be more advanced, which actually seem to be the case to a certain extent. More complex life like the Still Life were found in areas that are far different than the yellow wallpaper areas that we see mainly from the 1990s section, as well a recreation of “calming” music, like the music found in FF3 titles “Still Life”.

I’m not sure, this post was mostly a direct question with some added stream of thought tacked on, and I could be completely wrong on many aspects, but what are you guys’ thoughts?

I’ve never been one to do book reports well, or do things like highlight parts of books or leave notes in them. However, I really want to do that for House Of Leaves, I’m just not really sure where to start. So, if anyone has any advice on what sort of themes I can/should choose for highlighting, or just any advice in general, I’d be very appreciative
