This little guy fell "asleep" while moving him to release cage outside. Looks like he does not want go explore nature just yet.

Caterpillar Camouflage

Gastropacha quercifolias are one species with excellent camo. Very easy to miss if you dont know they are there. The small stubby "tail" even mimics leaf/flower buds or cut branch.

3rd instar Gastropacha quercifolia stuffing his face with green lunch.

Fun fact: Usually caterpillars have 5 or 6 instars. But overwintered G. Quercifolia caterpillars may have as many as 8 instars.
