What a mess

What should I do with this mess come winter? All this growth will die and new growth will begin from the roots next spring.
How do people turn their plants into trees that stay alive and keep growing? My plants have just started fruiting, so they’ll be no good come fall. I can’t figure out what to prune and what not to.

Call it quits?

This is my honeycrisp apple, 2nd year in the ground. It’s not dead but it sure isn’t growing. It grew some last year but not at all this year. My neighbor also has some cedar trees, I’m not sure if that’s causing this tree not to grow or what. I know cedars and apples don’t get along. My other tree is growing pretty well but it does get cedar rust. Neither tree bore fruit this year. Should I just call it quits on these and plant something else? I feel I’m fighting a loosing battle with my neighbors trees.
