Is it dumb to commute on a carbon bike?

We have a locked underground bike cage at work with very widely spaced racks that hardly anyone uses. I can ride to work and feel confident that my bike won’t be stolen or scratched and banged up.

So I’m considering a Felt VR Expert 105 Di2. I want this bike to take long weekend rides and try the Gran Fondo. I like the idea of just having one awesome bike instead of separate commuter and road bikes. (Mostly due to costs and storage limitations)

Is it possible to commute with it? It seems like the biggest drawbacks would be lack of cargo racks and possibly difficulty getting fenders on in the winter. Is this just a dumb idea or can I use such a bike for my daily commute and big fun rides?

Do you feel relaxed on long rides in the lower mainland?

I am interested in getting into road riding for leisure and ultimately try my hand at the Gran Fondo. I'm experienced riding around the city to commute, and I always feel safe thanks to all the greenways and bike lanes. However, I've never gone out for long rides and I wonder how people feel about it. I have dreams of long scenic rides but am I going to get a reality check? I hear people on other forums saying they feel endangered by drivers and feel like road riding is risky. Is that true in Vancouver and the lower mainland, or can you actually get into a groove and enjoy a long ride without fearing for your life?

Thanks for the tips

I was bored of this game but I got some great advice here and it's SO MUCH MORE FUN... finally! Actually, I'm kind of addicted. The tips that made Qud fun for me:

  1. Playing classic.

  2. Playing mutant.

  3. Forming a team (using beguile, proselytize, love injectors, reputation, etc.)

  4. Reading the wiki!!!!! Oh my god, I can't believe I wasn't reading the wiki.

I think playing on Roleplay for a while helped a lot, but it definitely got boring after a while. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

I know everyone asks this, but seriously, what am I missing?

I finally switched to Roleplay mode after failing Golgotha for the umpteenth time. Okay, so now I made it past Golgotha.

  • Level 28, true kin with multiple implants
  • Fullerite long sword, nano weave vest
  • Dozens of skills, including all wayfaring and tinker skills completed
  • I can Proselytize for a sidekick

BUT...

I'm still honestly not having that much fun. It STILL feels like a repetitive grind mostly. I have a schematic for Spray-a-Brain which I'm guessing might be interesting, but I've never used it and don't know what it does.

Other than that, my remaining quests are still a little too hard to succeed. One of them I'm overwhelmed by Bisludges every time. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with that problem without "cheating" by looking them up on the wiki, but maybe that's what I have to do? IT feels lazy though.

Anyway, my main question is, what am I doing wrong that makes the game seem boring? I hear people talk about all these nifty cascading mechanics and so forth, but I'm just walking around bonking things and throwing grenades and it's boring. So WHAT AM I MISSING?
