How is the field of power electronics doing in the US job market?

How much demand is there for fresh graduates in power electronics jobs? Is the field being negatively affected by AI and offshoring like software engineering is?

Questions for those who graduated

Has this degree helped you find a job or get a promotion? Did you encounter any employers expressing stigma over an online degree?

Also, if the degree has helped you, which track did you take courses from?

How is the embedded job market in the USA?

I am a web/desktop developer thinking about switching to embedded systems. How is the job market for people with less than 5 years of experience? Are AI and offshoring also causing disruptions to hiring like they are with web/desktop development? I would imagine the need for lab testing would make the field more resistant to AI and offshoring?

By the way, I am working on completing a BSEE so I have some knowledge of hardware and circuits. Embedded systems, power electronics, and power systems are the three areas I’m considering going into by the time I graduate.

Is Power Electronics useful for modern Power Systems Engineering?

I’m completing a BSEE but I would also like to get started on CU Boulder’s online MS-ECE. CU Boulder has a great reputation as an engineering school.

Their online MS-ECE is mostly concentrated in power electronics and embedded systems. I find those topics interesting but can they benefit me if I want to become a power systems engineer? Is there any use for them in transmission, substation design, or distribution?

CU Boulder Online MS-ECE

What are your thoughts on CU Boulder's online MS-ECE? CU Boulder is a top engineering school and the program offers many courses in embedded systems and power electronics.

Is this a good program to do if you're interested in embedded systems and power electronics? Or is there too much of a stigma surrounding online degrees?

Is the software development job market bad in CT right now?

I'm looking for a new job but I'm barely seeing any jobs posted for SWE roles requiring less than 5 years of experience.

I remember 3 years ago there were tons of jobs getting posted on Indeed, but now I'm seeing mostly senior positions and not much of anything else. Is Indeed considered outdated now? Do employers prefer posting their open positions elsewhere?

What are your thoughts on CCSU turning into a polytechnic university?

I’m sure many of you have heard the news that CCSU is investigating the possibility of transitioning the school into a polytechnic university. What are your thoughts on this? As someone who graduated from CCSU’s computer science program, I like the idea of the university putting more emphasis on the STEM programs. It’ll hopefully give CCSU more brand recognition for employers seeking to hire STEM majors. I know the computer science program is not as demanding as UConn’s because my cousin majored in CS at UConn and I’ve seen how difficult their homework assignments and exams are compared to ours — but I still think the CS program at CCSU is very solid. In fact, most of my friends and I were able to secure software development jobs that pay at least $85K right after graduating.

As a polytechnic university, hopefully the school will make the STEM majors more challenging and rigorous so that Central develops a better reputation for STEM. That and more research of course.

I have to say though, it does make me wonder what the future holds for non-STEM majors at CCSU. Will we see lower quality from those programs due to less focus and resources?

By the way, has there been any news on CCSU changing its name if it does end up actually changing to a polytechnic school? It would be cool if it‘s renamed to Connecticut Institute of Technology or ConnTech haha.

Switching from web/desktop development to embedded development

Hi, has anyone here switched from web/desktop development to embedded development? I’m curious to know what your experiences have been. What has been difficult about the switch? Have any skills from web/desktop transferred to embedded or did it mostly feel like starting from scratch? Do you have any advice for someone thinking about making the switch?

I’m thinking about switching to embedded systems by taking some coursework soon. If I do end up seeking a job in embedded systems, will my 3.5 years of .NET web/desktop development count for anything? Will I have to start from an entry level salary?

Also, do you think embedded systems development has less ageism than web/desktop dev? Web/desktop development constantly involves learning new tech stacks/frameworks every 2 or 3 years. There’s a stereotype that older devs are not capable of being able to learn new things constantly hence the ageism. I hear that even though embedded systems might be more difficult overall, the technology doesn’t change as fast and so older graybeards are more respected in embedded as opposed to web.

Advanced Embedded Linux Development Courses

Hi folks,

I’m a software developer who works on “high-level” coding projects such as websites and enterprise apps. I’ve been thinking about switching to a career in embedded systems development.

Is the Advanced Embedded Linux series a good way of assessing whether you will enjoy a career in embedded or not? Does it give you a lot of breadth in the embedded world and give you enough of a taste to determine whether “low-level” coding is for you or not?

Also, is it true that embedded work is a more stable career? I hear it has less ageism than web/desktop dev because the technology doesn’t change as fast. Is that true? In web, you might have to learn a new framework every 2 or 3 years. There’s a stereotype that older developers are just not up to the task of constantly learning new skills in that way.

Has anyone been able to transfer credits?

Has anyone here had luck transferring CSCA credits to other universities? Just curious if any other universities have been willing to accept them considering the unconventional 1-credit system. Have any schools been willing to count a full specialization as a 3-credit course?

CU Boulder online MSCS and MSECE

Has anyone here taken courses from CU Boulder’s MSCS and MSECE?

I’m a web/desktop dev looking to switch to an entry level embedded role. I have a BSCS and I’m in the middle of completing a BSEE part-time. I’m more than halfway through with it and I’m also doing CU Boulder’s online MSCS which is focused in AI-related courses. I can also take six credits of embedded systems coursework for the MSCS.

In my case, is it better to stick to the AI-focused MSCS with a few courses from embedded systems or am I better off switching to the MSECE program with most of the courses focused in embedded systems and some power electronics?

Does a BSCS/BSEE with a MSCS look attractive for today’s market with TinyML/Edge AI becoming popular? Or is the demand for TinyML/Edge AI not sigifnicant enough and I would be better off switching to the MSECE that’s focused on embedded systems? I already have a few credits from machine learning coursework that I can count towards the MSECE.

Question about textbooks and preparing for machine learning final exams

Do you have to read the textbook to prepare for the final exams in the machine learning specialization? Are the lectures sufficient for them? Is retaking the quizzes a good way to prepare for them?

I never read textbooks in any of the other specializations I took. Does this program ever actually require the textbook to do well for any of the courses? It seems like the textbooks are just supplemental material for your own knowledge.
