7/5/2026 Weekly Discussion - What are the best movies from the 1960s?

I'm going with 2001: A Space Odyssey....but I actually think that Dr. Strangelove, also from Kubrick, is a solid pick as well. Kubrick delivered two classics in just a few years.

I don't like Lawrence of Arabia as much as most people, but I won't be surprised if people pick it. It certainly has some of the absolute best cinematography of any film.

6/28/26 Weekly Discussion: What are the greatest movies of the 1950s?

Singin' In the Rain is certainly near the top if not at the top.

Paths of Glory as well.

12 Angry Men is so great; I prefer the film version over the TV original.

I dislike The Searchers, though. Shocking, right?

Masters of the Universe - the surprise of the summer(year?)

I went in expecting an OK film. It frickin’ won me over. It’s a comedy! It’s a comedy! It’s comedy!

I said that three times because while the trailers showed some jokes, it did not make it clear that this is purely comedic. I laughed a lot more than I expected to. It’s jarring how funny it is and how aware everyone in the movie is about how silly this all is.

Loved it. It’s not easy to win me over, but by the last 45 minutes, I was smiling and cheering(internally).

Great, fun, highly recommended summer movie.

Two notes:

1. It’s 140 minutes. Just realize it’s longer than most summer movies.

2. Jared Leto plays Skeletor. I had no idea. I don’t know why they keep giving him work when he has a bad reputation, but they do. He’s great in the movie, really great. But I know some people are boycotting him, more or less.

In Exorcist 3, during the long hallway shot, was the noise only the ice in the glass or also the "bone cutting shears" being cranked open?

I had never seen Exorcist III. Great movie.

The nurse was bothered by a noise. She goes into a room and it's ice cracking in a glass. Whew.

But then she is killed by the shears we saw are super difficult to open. Was the noise also the cranking/ratcheting the shears open?

6/15/26 - Weekly discussion. What are your top 5 Steven Spielberg films?

I guess I'll start. My list goes like this.

  1. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - a perfect script, edit, score, story, and acting.

  2. Minority Report - I always thought this would top any list, but I appear to be in the minority(giggle) that I think this is an amazing film.

  3. Jurassic Park - It hold up completely. Saw it in the theater at age 15 and still am happy to see it looks and sounds great.

  4. Saving Private Ryan - Stunning. The opening alone would earn it a slot.

  5. Raiders of the Lost Ark - I bet this is a lot of redditors' number one. It's terrific.

Note: I saw Schindler's List one time. It probably deserves a slot, but my memory of it isn't good enough and it was just so intense and sad, I've never seen it again.

Is Tubi airing all of the World Cup? I'm trying to decide if I need to shell out for Fox Sports.

So is Tubi airing all matches of the world cup free of charge? Or is it only a few select ones?

Smothered* is excellent. Don't miss out on this one just because it is Indonesian.

*sMothered is how it is stylized.

  1. It's from Joko Anwar, but not directed by. He wrote and, get this, edited it. He's a star of Indonesian movie making.

  2. Go in blind. I know that is always the case, but in this one, it is really necessary. The plot is very interesting and I think the final 20-25 minutes had me put everything down and just watch.

  3. Great movie, one of the best of the year. I would rank Obsession a bit higher, but this one is in the top films of the year so far.

Streams on Shudder.

I took a picture today and almost felt like I'd gone back in time. A operating pay phone and Runts machine!

Foolish Mortals - I just finished it today. Here are my general thoughts.

Good game. I'll list some pros and cons here. I presume anyone interested is familiar with the genre of adventure games like Monkey Island and so forth.

Pros:

  • Very well structured objectives. I always knew what I was trying to do and solve.
  • Many puzzles have satisfying solutions. Looking back, they made sense.
  • Very interesting story. Very. I.....did not predict where it was all going. I was impressed.
  • Animations and Voice Acting is all excellent. Looks and sounds great. Music, too!
  • Some good user interface things, like shortcuts to key locations. Helped a lot.
  • Ran completely smoothly on Steam Deck with no accommodations needed.
  • Classic adventure game style.
  • Good price point for the content you get.

Cons:

  • Played terribly with controller. I finished Drifter and Lorelei with the Laser eyes and both games played perfectly with controller. Developers have said a fix is coming soon.
  • 2-3 times, there was simply an object I had not noticed to pick up and I had to look up a solution to realize I had missed an object.
  • While you can skip dialogue sometimes, there were times you can't and I was reading faster than the voice actor. Mild annoyance.

I recommend the game. It has flaws, but is a solid game and has a great price point. If you have never played an adventure game before, I actually bet it will be even more impressive to you.

6/5 - Weekly discussion question: What are your favorite final lines from movies?

Tell us the name of the movie, please. It's not really a guessing game here.

Mine is from In Bruges:

"There's a Christmas tree somewhere in London with a bunch of presents underneath it that'll never be opened. And I thought, if I survive all of this, I'd go to that house, apologize to the mother there, and accept whatever punishment she chose for me. Prison... death... didn't matter. Because at least in prison and at least in death, you know, I wouldn't be in fuckin' Bruges. But then, like a flash, it came to me. And I realized, fuck man, maybe that's what hell is: the entire rest of eternity spent in fuckin' Bruges. And I really really hoped I wouldn't die. I really really hoped I wouldn't die."

Would you please recommend good anime that have unusual or quirky premises?

I finished Nyaight of the Living Cat recently and am now in season 2 of "Reborn a Vending Machine".

Their unusual premises are not the only draw. They are also pretty good shows.

Can anyone name some other high-quality anime that have unusual premises? Thanks.

5/24 Weekly Discussion: Director spotlight. What Takashi Miike movies and other projects do you enjoy? Which ones do you recommend?

Yes, he has about 100 movies and he makes a fair amount of, well, not great stuff. But, man, when he is on, he is on. I recommend the following:

- Audition

- Ichi the Killer

- Imprint(short film)

- As the Gods Will

- Three....Extremes(he does one segment)

- Dead or Alive

- Nyaight of the Living Cat (anime show)

- Lumberjack the Monster

Anyone else a fan?

5/17 Weekly Discussion Question - What was the movie you saw as a kid that made you realize it was possible for movies to be bad? The first film you said "Hey....that's bad."

I am a child of the 1980s. We saw a movie, we liked it for what it was. However, as with anyone, there had to be a moment I saw a movie and realized it sucked. I had two:

  1. Superman IV - We went to the theater. We were pumped up. It did not take long before even I, at age 8, was saying that the effects look terrible. And the story is boring. And everything is terrible. We discussed its badness in the car on the way home.

  2. Leonard Part 6 - My Dad rented it. He probably saw Cosby* and its a family safe comedy and brought it home. Lame. Not one laugh, even from kids.

*Mind you, we had only positive associations with Cosby at that time.

Fatigue. Will it improve? Wegovy 1MG weekly shot.

I have taken two shots. I am 10 days in.

I feel very tired for some reason. I guess I'm eating less, but it seems more pervasive than just food related. I feel like fatigue is directly related to the shot.

Will it improve? I have 28 weekly shots of 1MG and was planning to use them over the next few months.

I keep reading about protein and stuff. I....guess I should be working on that? Not sure.
