Aang's relationship with Katara in season 2
To preface my post, I'd like to admit that I enjoyed this season. It's certainly far from perfect, yet I find many of the scenes compelling enough to keep watching.
However, there's one thing that feels off to me. I've been trying to understand the reasoning behind this creative choice for a while now.
What's up with Aang's anger towards Katara?
Aang clearly knows his actions are wrong. He makes an attempt to apologise to her the next day (after saying he doesn't need her), but she's out talking to the general. Then, for some reason, he doesn't try again later on, which, admittedly, I find odd. I can kind of see him feeling uncomfortable approaching Katara after yelling at her, but he seems so determined to make things right... I don't know. It feels really inconsistent.
Anyway, I'd love to hear your take on the whole ordeal. As I said before, I've been mulling that sequence over in my head again and again, so I eventually came to my own conclusions, but they feel... kind of hollow? I can't quite put my finger on it.
My reasoning involves a mix of complex feelings and trauma that Aang might be experiencing in that situation. Let me know what you think.
Firstly, we may need to take a closer look at one specific conversation that takes place in the fourth episode. Toph goes out of her way to protect Aang's feelings, as it's heavily implied she thinks Katara is sneaking out to meet up with a potential romantic interest. In that case, the main source of Aang's anger is jealousy.
Secondly, Aang's behaviour might have something to do with his fear of being left all alone (which would be an indirect reference to the Bato episode in the OG series). Maybe he senses that Katara is slipping away. He's afraid she doesn't care about him anymore, and that's why he reacts to it with anger.
To be completely honest with you guys, I still don't think this sequence is written very well. Am I missing something?
