Looking Back at 2025/26: August 2025 – The Return to the Premier League, Massive Signings, and Late Drama

Here we go

Now that the season is wrapped up I wanted to start a series looking back at how this journey actually kicked off. Let's cast our minds back to August 2025.

Coming back into the top flight after an eight-year absence, nobody really knew what to expect from Régis Le Bris’ new-look squad, especially with seven debutants starting on day one including Granit fucking Xhaka. I think it was around £100m spent but if you have a source let me know and i'll update.

Here’s how our opening month went down:

Matchweek 1: Sunderland 3 - 0 West Ham United

  • Date: 16th August 2025
  • Scorers: Mayenda (60'), Ballard (72'), Isidor (90+2')
  • Report: A dream return to the Premier League for Sunderland as Regis Le Bris’ new look side dismantled a lackluster West Ham at a bouncing Stadium of Light. After a cagey first half defined by Dan Ballard’s heroic defensive blocks and a sharp stop from debutant keeper Robin Roefs to deny Jarrod Bowen, the Black Cats turned on the style after the break. Eliezer Mayenda opened the scoring with a brilliant header from Omar Alderete’s cross just on the hour mark. Ballard then turned goalscorer, powering home a bullet header from Simon Adingra's delivery to double the advantage, before substitute Wilson Isidor capped a perfect afternoon with a clinical stoppage time breakaway finish to seal an emphatic opening day statement.

Matchweek 2: Burnley 2 - 0 Sunderland

  • Date: 23rd August 2025
  • Report: A swift reality check for Sunderland as Burnley exploited defensive disruption to condemn the visitors to their first defeat of the season at Turf Moor. The Black Cats started brightly with Eliezer Mayenda testing Martin Dubravka early on, but the match turned on its head when influential centre back Dan Ballard was forced off with an injury after just nine minutes. Burnley took full advantage immediately after the interval when Josh Cullen struck to break the deadlock. Despite Sunderland pushing men forward for an equalizer, Jaidon Anthony killed off the contest with a ruthless counter attack late on to highlight the fine margins of top flight football.

Carabao Cup 2nd Round: Huddersfield Town 1 - 1 Sunderland (Huddersfield win 6-5 on pens)

  • Date: 26th August 2025
  • Scorers: Marc Guiu (84')
  • Report: Sunderland suffered an early casualty in the Carabao Cup as a resilient Huddersfield Town edged past the Premier League outfit via a dramatic penalty shootout. Regis Le Bris rotated his squad heavily for the midweek trip, handing a debut to Nordi Mukiele, but the Black Cats struggled to establish their usual fluid passing rhythm in a physical encounter. With the sides deadlocked at 1-1 after ninety minutes, the tie went straight to spot kicks, where the hosts held their nerve to progress 6-5, leaving Sunderland to focus entirely on their domestic league campaign.

Matchweek 3: Sunderland 2 - 1 Brentford

  • Date: 30th August 2025
  • Scorers: Le Fée (81' pen), Isidor (96')
  • Report: Late drama enveloped the Stadium of Light as Wilson Isidor struck deep into stoppage time to earn Sunderland a breathless comeback victory over Brentford. The Bees looked poised to steal the points when Igor Thiago headed them into a 77th minute lead, shortly after Robin Roefs had expertly denied Kevin Schade from the penalty spot to keep the hosts level. However, the Black Cats responded instantly when Habib Diarra won a penalty which Enzo Le Fée calmly dispatched on his full league debut. With seconds remaining, skipper Granit Xhaka delivered a spectacular 96th minute cross for Isidor to nod home, sparking absolute pandemonium in the stands.

What were your honest thoughts at the end of August? Was Burnley a reality check and did the cup exit help us focus purely on the league or was it a missed opportunity?, were you predicting anything close to the European qualification we eventually got? or were you just happy to see us competing in the Premier League again?

If you's like this sort of stuff I'll write up the September review. Haway the lads!
